A New Zealander's drug smuggling trial is set to resume, with the judges satisfied he is well enough to continue after a health scare.

Antony De Malmanche, 52, fainted in court last month after clutching at his chest and complaining he could not understand the court translation.

De Malmanche, who says he has a history of angina, was granted leave from trial for a medical check.

Prosecutor Siti Sawiyah told the court last week that specialists had given his heart the all-clear.

She told the court she had seen the Kiwi smoking, and that on the day of his collapse in court, there were cigarettes in his pocket.

De Malmanche said it was true and that he had been a smoker since the age of 15.

His lawyer Chris Harno objected to his smoking being raised in court, and said the hospital visit should have been supervised to ensure it was objective and thorough.

"The prosecutor should've ordered the prison governor or other authorities to go," he said.

The prosecutor said the New Zealand consulate had been notified, and chief judge Cening Budiana said he was satisfied the physician's work would not have been influenced.

The trial is expected to resume on Thursday with prosecution witnesses.

De Malmanche was arrested in December at Bali's International airport and charged with carrying 1.7kg of methamphetamine.

He will defend charges that carry the death penalty by arguing he fell victim to an online scam, and did not know the drugs were in his backpack.
