AN ALL night beer drinking binge ended in tragedy when one of the revellers, still in a drunken stupor, fell into the Singapore River and drowned early on Thursday morning. Mohamed Asrul, 24, who was to have started work at a new cargo handling job in Changi on Thursday, and a group of friends started drinking at about 11 pm on Wednesday at The Central, near Coleman Bridge in Clarke Quay. According to his friends, is was their usual hangout on off-days, where they would meet to drink about once a week.

Only Asrul and three friends - all in their 20s - in the group of nine drank through the night. Two of them later fell asleep on a public bench facing the river while another two, including Asrul, dozed off on the steps of the river bank, which does not have railings. At about 7 am, an unsteady Asrul woke up and wanted to go home but he lost his balance and fell into the Singapore River, according to his friends who witnessed the incident. Two of them jumped in fully-clothed and tried to pull Asrul out but could not find his body.

One called the police who arrived at about 7.14 am, followed by a team from the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Diving at a depth of about two meters, DART rescuers found the body about one metre away from the riverbank at about 7.50 am. Asrul leaves behind his father and older brother, 28, both of whom are cleaners. Police are investigating the incident and have classified it as "unnatural death".
