Hawkers in Ali Baba deals with foreigners
MANY hawkers are renting out their stalls or business licences to foreign workers to gain a fast buck, reported Nanyang Siang Pau. The stalls and business licences are “leased” out for RM20 to RM30 per day, added the paper. Housing and Local Government Ministry’s Local Government Department director-general Datuk Arpah Abdul Razak warned that local hawkers would be blacklisted if they were found renting or transferring their licences to foreigners.
“Hawkers need to renew their licences every year. Once they are blacklisted, they cannot apply for licences anymore,” she said. She said the ministry’s enforcement officers could also seize the goods at the stalls if they were found to be operating illegally. “Foreign workers are not allowed to operate stalls,” she said, adding that the ministry had carried out operations to tackle the problem.
Federation of Malaysia Hawkers Association president Lee Teong Chwee urged hawkers to abide by the rules and regulations to prevent their licences from being revoked. He said the association would meet Housing and Local Govern_ment Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung soon to urge the minister to act sternly against foreign workers who operated stalls illegally.
