SINGAPORE: More than 120 hawker stallholders in Bedok and Kampong Chai Chee have pledged to maintain prices for six months or try not to raise prices.

They are part of efforts by the Bedok North 216 Food Centre & Market Hawker's Association and Kampong Chai Chee Blk 207 Food Centre Area Sub-Committees to cushion the impact of rising prices.

The initiative is supported by the Singapore Bedok Town Centre Merchant's Association.

A number of stalls in Bedok have traditionally kept prices low, with some maintaining a S$2.00 price tag for more than 10 years.

Customers of the stalls which have pledged to maintain prices will be given coupons to free coffee or tea at other participating drink stalls in both food centres during the launch on Sunday.

They can easily identify the stalls, as the stalls will have a label from the Retail Price Watch Group, whose job is to keep an eye on any excessive price increases of daily necessities and anti-competitive behaviour by businesses.

The rent from govt is very reasonable with some stalls in the country as low as $300. Yet the hawkers got the cheek to keep increasing price.

Hawkers also v smart nowadays cos last time $3 give u 2 eggs. So now they say they charge u same price but reduce to 1 egg.

Mee goreng is the worst. Nowadays, $3 without egg and $3.50 with one egg.

Wonder if anyone notices the "6 mths", the same that screw them or us for the already increased in prices, are the same that says they maintain the price increase for 6 mths. After 6 mths, they will have 1001 excuses to say that cost had gone up.... it is the lanlord rental that have to be moniored, the minister salaries, the civi service salaries, these have the greatest multiplier effect on price increases.
