KOTA KINABALU - Foreign workers must carry their original travel documents with them at all times to prevent from being detained during operations.
Sabah Immigration Department Director Datuk Mohammad Mentek said foreigners who failed to present their original travel documents when stopped would be detained on the spot.
He said the detained immigrants would, however, be released if their family members or employers produced their original documents.
Mentek said even those who clai*med that their passports were being processed at the Immigration Dep*artment would still be sent to temporary detention centres or lock-ups unless they had the original copies of supporting documents with them.
Mentek was responding to Indo*nesian Consul-General for Sabah Soepeno Sahid's call for Immigration enforcement officers to properly verify the status of foreigners before sending them to lock-ups.
"The Consul-General needs to understand that not all enforcement officers have the list of legal foreign workers during operations," Mentek said.
