Staying power

SOME Asian political parties with a long grip on power.

India's Congress party

Established in 1885, it became India's dominant political party after independence in 1947, staying in power until 1977. It returned to power in 1980 and has won the past three general elections.

Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT)

Founded in 1912, the KMT ruled much of China from 1928 until it fled to Taiwan in 1949 after defeat by the Chinese Communist Party. The KMT, which supports eventual reunification with mainland China, ruled Taiwan from 1950 until 2000, when it lost to the Democratic Progressive Party. Mr Ma Ying-jeou won back the presidency last year.

Singapore's People's Action Party (PAP)

The PAP, founded in 1954, came to power in 1959. It has won 12 successive general elections, becoming the longest-ruling elected political party in the world.
