Hacker asks law expert’s e-mail contacts for money
PETALING JAYA: A cyber criminal has allegedly hacked into constitutional law expert Prof Shad Saleem Faruqi’s e-mail account in an attempt to cheat people of their money.
The impostor forwarded an e-mail entitled “I Need Your Help” to all Shad’s contacts on Wednesday, claiming that he was in Madrid, Spain, for a programme and was having some difficulties as he had misplaced his wallet.
The impostor asked for a loan of 2,000 euros (RM8,000) to sort out hotel bills and return to the country when Prof Shad was actually in Malaysia.
He or she also claimed to have spoken to the embassy in Madrid, which was not attending to the matter effectively.
When contacted, Prof Shad said somebody had hacked into his e-mail account.
“It is a cyber crime. My family, my daughter and my son received the e-mail. It was forwarded to every address on my account.
“I was answering calls from 8pm until 3am yesterday,” he said in response to the e-mail which was sent to The Star account on Wednesday.
Prof Shad said he would lodge a police report on the matter.
