宜州乍洞村是云贵高原南麓的一个小村庄，四周青山延绵不绝，风景秀美。但进村只能通过曲曲折折的小路，路窄得两辆车都无法并行。
谢万举当乍洞村第一驻村书记是2016年开始的。为了改善村民的生活，他帮助村民在山里种植百香果，赚钱修路，发家致富。村里多是老人家，所以他就从城里动员招募了很多志愿者，为山村发展助力。
某天，有个朋友说要介绍个外国朋友过来，那便是谢万举和尼可的第一次见面。因为共同的追求，两人一见如故，开始了漫长的友谊。谢万举不是很懂英文，尼可也只能说一些简单的中文，一开始两人主要靠眼神和手势交流。尼可说：“不需要说那么多，工作就好了。”
尼可和这片土地的缘分要从2013年说起。因伤提前退休的卢森堡警察尼可开始了一次环球旅行。他去过非洲、美洲、亚洲的许多国家，接着来到了中国。在南宁旅行时，他偶然看到一位宜州女孩推荐的电影《刘三姐》，瞬间被电影打动了，他决心要到刘三姐的家乡去看看。
这一来，他一见钟情。
宜州这座美丽的小城，街道宽敞整洁，空气清新，整个城市被连绵起伏的青山环绕着，这正是他梦寐以求的居住地。随后，他把卢森堡的房子和车子都卖了，在宜州买了房子，决心在此长住，于是才有了后面的故事。
尼可是来乍洞村时间最长的志愿者，和谢万举总是形影不离，出现在大山各处。他们一起照顾百香果，打桩、搭架、拉线、栽插、植苗，尼可甚至更专业一点。而每次提起谢万举，尼可也会竖起大拇指，“如果不是对他的工作很认可，我就不和他待在一起了”。
尼可、谢万举和村民们早就成了好朋友，同吃同住，还学会了简单的壮语。在他们的一起努力下，种百香果赚了钱，也修了好几条路，能为山村为大家做点什么，他们发自内心地开心。
这个在大山里忙碌的外国人说，“有人问我为什么要做这些，我做志愿者不是为了金钱，也不是为了好名声，我这么做是为了遵从我的内心，希望年轻人可以回到村子，继续我们开创的事业，给村庄一个未来。”
