No one else was injured but police were said to be scouring the campus for a possible second suspect. "The person involved in this morning's shooting on campus has been confirmed dead on the sixth floor of the Perry Castaneda Library from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the university said in a notice on its website.
"Law enforcement are searching for a second suspect. If you are off campus, STAY AWAY. If you are on campus, lock doors, do not leave your building." Specialised police tanks and armoured vehicles were patrolling the sprawling campus, local TV coverage showed. Rohnda Weldon, the university's director of communications, said reports of an armed man on campus came in around 8am local time.
The University of Texas was the site of one of the most notorious mass shootings in US history. In 1966, student Charles Whitman opened fire from the observation deck of the university's soaring tower. In total, he killed 15 people, including his wife and mother earlier in their home, before he was shot by police.
