Three miles from Obama fundraiser, black-clad man shoots up California college before being taken down by authorities

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — A gunman with an assault-style rifle killed at least six people in Santa Monica on Friday before police shot him to death in a gunfight in the Santa Monica College library, authorities said.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks told reporters the rampage began at a house in the coastal city before the gunman, dressed all in black, made his way to Santa Monica College.

Seabrooks said he killed two people in the house, which caught fire, two more people as he moved several blocks toward the campus, and then two more on campus.

He entered the library and fired on other people but didn’t hit them, Seabrooks said.

Several students in the library reported hearing gunfire, and one witness said he heard a woman scream.

“The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene,” Seabrooks said.

She identified the gunman as 25 to 30 years old and dressed all in black, wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket.

The campus was searched for a second shooter, and a man dressed entirely in black, with the words “Life is a Gamble” on the back of his sweatshirt, was seen being taken into custody by law enforcement officers. He did not appear to be wounded.

“We are not convinced 100 percent that the suspect who was killed operated in a solo or alone capacity,” Seabrooks said.

All of this unfolded about 3 miles from where President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon.

Three women with gunshot wounds were admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Dr. Marshall Morgan, the chief of emergency medicine. One died, another was in surgery, and the third was in serious condition but doing well, he said.

Three other women went to UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica with relatively minor injuries, Morgan said. One has shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire, he said.

Jeff Furrows of the Santa Monica Fire Department said there was extensive fire damage inside the home where two bodies were found, and one of the wounded women was found with a gunshot wound in a car nearby.

Jerry Cunningham Rathner, who lives near the house, said she heard gunshots and came out onto her porch to see a man shooting at the residence. Soon, the building erupted in flames and was billowing smoke.

The gunman, dressed in black and wearing an ammunition belt, went to the corner and pointed a rifle at a woman in a car and told her to pull over, Rathner said. He then signaled to a second car, also driven by a woman, to slow down and began firing into the vehicle.

“He fired three to four shots into the car — boom, boom, boom, right at her,” said Cunningham, who went to the woman’s aid and saw she was wounded in the shoulder.

“I can’t believe she didn’t have worse injuries,” Cunningham said.

She said the gunman then abducted the woman in the first car and drove away.

From there, the scene shifted to Santa Monica College, located in a neighborhood of strip malls and homes more than a mile inland from the city’s famous Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade and its expansive, sandy beaches.

Jimes Gillespie, 20, told The Associated Press he was in the college’s library studying when he heard gunfire, and he and dozens of other students began fleeing the three-story building.

“As I was running down the stairs I saw one of the gunmen,” said Gillespie, who described the shooter as a white man in his 20s, wearing cornrows in his hair and black overalls. He said the man was carrying a shotgun.

Gillespie believed there were two shooters because he heard two kinds of gunfire — a shotgun and a handgun — but only saw one person.

“The shotgun blast was first. It was either him or the partner who shot eight to 10 handgun shots,” Gillespie said. “Then after I saw the gunman I heard more shots and I ran out of the library through the emergency exit.”

As Gillespie ran across campus, he said he saw a car in front of the English building that was riddled with bullet holes, had shattered windows and a baby’s car seat in the back.

Another student, Khwanfa Wilepananon, said he and a friend were on the library’s third floor when they heard a loud bang and a woman’s scream coming from the first floor. As he and a friend fled downstairs, he said they heard two shots.

“It was so scary,” said Wilepananon. “It was so dark and I was scared. We didn’t know what to do.”

Santa Monica police Sgt. Rudy Flores said numerous witnesses called to report that the shooting near the college began with a man on a street corner near the college firing shots at vehicles, including a bus.

California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Ramirez said his agency began receiving 911 calls just minutes before noon.

“We understand one shooter was taken into custody shortly after we arrived,” he said.

The two-year college, with about 34,000 students, was in the midst of final exams Friday. It was quickly locked down by police, and students were told to leave.

As the drama unfolded, Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon about 3 miles away.

Secret Service spokesman Max Milien said the agency was aware of the shooting but it had no impact on the president’s event.

Police seek motive in Southern California killing spree

<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wiqWOA4Umtc?rel=0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

By Dan Whitcomb
LOS ANGELES | Sat Jun 8, 2013 3:03am EDT

(Reuters) - Police on Saturday were investigating what prompted a man dressed in black to embark on a string of shootings in the beach community of Santa Monica, killing four people before police gunned him down in a community college library.

Five other people were wounded in the shooting rampage, which unfolded just a few miles from where President Barack Obama was speaking at a political fundraiser elsewhere in Santa Monica, west of Los Angeles.

The bloodshed did not appear to be related to Obama's visit to Santa Monica and the Secret Service called it a "local police matter."

The killing spree marked the latest in string of high-profile mass shootings over the past year, including a December attack in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school and a shooting last July at a suburban Denver movie theater that killed 12 people.

Those attacks have helped reignite a national debate over gun violence in America that spurred Obama and his fellow Democrats to push for expanded background checks for gun buyers - an initiative defeated in the U.S. Senate.

Police say the carnage began at a home east of the college, where the gunman shot two people dead before apparently torching the home. The Los Angeles Times, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the first two victims were believed to be the gunman's father and brother.

Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis said that after leaving the home the gunman carjacked a woman and ordered her to drive. Along the way he fired at least several rounds at a city bus, wounding three people.

Arriving at the college, the gunman opened fire on a red sports utility vehicle in a staff parking lot, killing the driver and critically wounding his passenger, Lewis said.

The gunman, who was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and at least one handgun, then shot and killed another victim at the college before he was slain in an exchange of gunfire with police, Lewis said.

He said investigators had not yet determined a motive for the rampage, adding: "It's a horrific event that everybody wishes never happened."

Obama had been attending a fundraising event at the Santa Monica home of former News Corp President Peter Chernin at about the time of the shooting and had just finished his remarks. He made no mention of the incident.

A Secret Service spokesman in Washington said: "We are aware of the incident and it is not impacting the visit. It's a local police matter at this point."

Obama's departure from Los Angeles was rerouted to avoid the scene, a White House press secretary said.

US rampage gunman had 'bag full' of ammunition

AFP June 9, 2013, 1:31 pm

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A gunman who killed four people in a shooting and carjacking rampage in California before being shot by police, was carrying "a bag full" of ammunition as well as a handgun and a semiautomatic rifle, officials said at a press conference.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said the gunman, whose name she did not release, was armed with some 1,300 rounds of ammunition and an arsenal of weapons during Friday's bloody killing spree.

The suspect carried "a bag full of loaded magazines," Seabrooks said, as he stormed through the streets of Santa Monica.

In addition to those killed, the suspect left several people injured in a string of random shootings in the normally placid southern California town.

He ended up on the campus of Santa Monica College, which police said he formerly attended as a student.

"The suspect walked along campus shooting as he went along," Seabrooks said.

"The suspect entered the library, attempted to kill several patrons hiding in a safe room. It is miraculous those individuals weren't physically injured," she said, adding that the assailant was fatally shot in the library by police.

The violence began with shootings in a nearby house, which was then set on fire.

Authorities said two bodies found in the burnt-out home were those of the gunman's father and brother. Officials said the suspect carried out the assault one day before his 24th birthday.

The shootings occurred only a few miles from an event attended by President Barack Obama on Friday.

They are the latest in an all-too regular succession of such rampages, which fuel the gun control debate in America.

Last year, a young gunman massacred 20 schoolchildren in Connecticut, and another slayed 12 moviegoers in a theater in Colorado.

Santa Monica Shootings: Police ID Gunman

By Todd Cunningham | The Wrap – 2 hours 28 minutes ago

Santa Monica Shootings: Police ID Gunman

Police have identified the gunman who went on a shooting rampage at Santa Monica City College Friday that left five people dead.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis told TheWrap Sunday that 23-year-old John Zawahri killed his father and older brother at their home Friday before going on a shooting spree in the streets and at the nearby college.

Zawahri was shot to death by police in a chaotic scene at the college's library.

The area where the rampage occurred is mainly residential but only blocks from numerous media companies, including nearby MTV, Lionsgate and Yahoo. Many members of the creative community choose to live in the area. Dozens of small production and new media companies are located within blocks of the shooting.

At the time of the shooting, President Obama was appearing with Chernin Group CEO Peter Chernin, who was hosting a fundraiser at his Santa Monica home, filled with a number of Hollywood figures .

Authorities had not immediately named the shooter or the two men found dead in the house because next of kin was out of the country and hadn't been notified, Lewis said. His name was released Sunday after his mother cut her trip short and came back to the country.

Santa Monica Shootings: Father, Daughter Among the Victims

By JOHN SCHRIFFEN, ALEXIS SHAW and DEAN SCHABNER | Good Morning America – 4 hours ago

abc_santa_monica_shooting_carlos_franco_marcela_franco_jt_130609_wmain.jpg

A Santa Monica College employee and his daughter were among the victims of a shooting rampage that left five people dead as well as the suspected gunman.

Marcela Franco, 26, was with her father, Carlos, 68, when the gunman -- described by police as "heavily armed" and "ready for battle" -- came on the campus in Santa Monica, Calif., Friday.

The gunman opened fire on the car the Francos were driving in, spraying it with bullets and killing Carlos Franco. The vehicle crashed into a wall, criticially injuring Marcela, who died this morning at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center with her family by her side, according to a statement from the school.

"Our deepest sympathies go to the Franco family," college president Chui L. Tsang said in an email today. "At the appropriate time, the College will convene a campus-wide memorial." Marcela Franco had registered to attend classes at Santa Monica College this summer, Tsang said in the email.

Carlos Franco, who was a longtime groundskeeper at the college, "was very well liked and very respected," Santa Monica Police Chief Albert Vasquez said in a news conference today.

Surveillance video footage released today shows fearful Santa Monica, Calif., restaurant-goers ducking under tables as the suspected gunman, whom ABC News has identified as 23-year-old John Zawahri, opens fire outside.

"He shot 16 shots," restaurant owner Chedi Abed told ABC Los Angeles affiliate KABC-TV.

In addition, authorities released surveillance camera images of the gunman, whose name has not been officially announced by police, entering the Santa Monica College library wielding an assault rifle. Arezou Zakarai, who was in the library at the time of the shootings, told ABC News she was happy to be alive after the chilling ordeal.

"Three girls ran into the library yelling, 'There's a shooter! He has a gun! Help! Oh no!'" she said. "I got under a table and then there were three consecutive shots." Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said that once in the library, the gunman allegedly shot at students who barricaded themselves inside a "safe room."

"They stacked items found in the safe room against the door, hunkered down and avoided shots that were fired through the drywall at them as they were in that room,"

Seabrooks said in a news conference on Saturday. He allegedly killed five people in what authorities characterized as a deliberate attack before he was gunned down in a shootout with police in the library. Vasquez said that a vigil would taken place during Tuesday's regularly scheduled graduation ceremony in light of the shootings.

Police said the suspect was wearing a protective vest and carrying so much weaponry he was, in the words of one official, "ready for battle."

"I would presume anytime someone puts on a vest of some sort and has a bag of loaded magazines as an extra receiver, has a handgun and has a semi automatic rifle, carjacks folks, goes to a college, kills more people and has to be neutralized at hands of police -- I would stay that's premeditated," Seabrooks said.

Police confirmed that the suspect would have turned 24 years old on Saturday and that he, along with another family member, had a connection to Santa Monica College. He was carrying approximately 1,300 rounds of ammunition, in addition to a revolver and a rifle similar to an AR-15 semi-automatic in a duffel bag, Seabrooks said.

Police had responded to an earlier incident involving the suspect in 2006, Seabrooks said, but she could not release anything more about that incident because he was a minor at the time.

Shooting Timeline

On Friday, authorities first responded to a report of shots fired at 11:52 a.m. PT and found a house on fire. Two dead bodies were found inside the home, fire officials said. Authorities said the dead bodies were related to the shooter, but they did not specify how.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the front room before finding the bodies, which were toward the rear of the house. Authorities told reporters they were still investigating what caused the fire.

A few minutes after noon, Santa Monica authorities started getting calls that a city bus was being hit with gunfire. The suspected gunman had reportedly carjacked a woman at gunpoint and forced her to drive him to Santa Monica College's campus, spraying bullets at nearby vehicles on the route.

Two people riding a city bus sustained minor injuries from the gunfire. The woman, who was forced to drive the shooter to the Santa Monica College campus, was unharmed.

According to police, the suspect fired on Marcela Franco and her father, Carlos who were in a Ford Explorer in the campus faculty parking lot. That vehicle later crashed into a block wall.

Once on campus, the suspected shooter, who was dressed in all black, opened fire at bystanders, fatally shooting one woman and before he went inside a library on campus, police said.

Authorities did not identify the woman who was killed by name, but said she was appeared to be white and in her 50's. Once in the library, the shooter initially tried to shoot students in a "safe room," according to Seabrooks. But the students were able to barricade the door.

"He continued to shoot at them," Seabrooks said. "The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect, and he was shot and killed on the scene."

Three officers engaged the suspect according to authorities, two from the Santa Monica Police Department and one from Santa Monica College. While authorities first stated the shootings left as many as six people dead, they later downgraded to five deaths, which included four victims and the shooter himself.

Lewis suggested the initial overcount may have been caused by overlapping witness reports of the same fatalities. In addition to the dead, at least five people were injured, police said.

The college campus went on lockdown following the shootings as police attempted to secure the scene. The campus was expected to reopen Monday morning at 7 a.m.

ABC News' Gillian Mohney, Christina Ng, Michael James, Jack Date and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
