SINGAPORE: Singapore Silat Federation's (SSF) chief executive officer Sheik Alau’ddin has been arrested for suspected criminal breach of trust, said the Singapore Police Force on Saturday (Nov 25).
In response to CNA's queries, the police added that the two-time world champion was arrested on Thursday.
"We are not able to comment further as the investigation is ongoing," the police said.
An SSF spokesperson told CNA on Sunday that Dr Sheik is assisting the police's Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) with investigations.
"We are unable to disclose further details as investigations are ongoing. Where necessary, the Singapore Silat Federation will cooperate with the CAD throughout its investigations," said the SSF spokesperson.
In response to CNA's queries, a Sport Singapore (SportSG) spokesperson said it is aware of the ongoing investigation by the CAD into financial irregularities at the SSF involving its CEO.
"To this end, we are working closely with SSF to safeguard against further financial risks, and ensure that Team Singapore Silat athletes continue to be supported on their training needs," the SportSG spokesperson added.
In February, SSF lodged a police report against its finance director after irregularities relating to salary payments to some of the coaches under the sports body were uncovered.
A probe was launched after SportSG said it had received feedback alleging that there were irregularities in SSF's finance practices.
Investigations discovered there "was cause for serious concern", SportSG then said in a statement.
SSF also said after the incident that it would "take this opportunity to review our internal processes and strengthen the system".
Dr Sheik, who was crowned world champion in 1990 and 1994, was appointed to the role of national silat coach in 1999 and is a four-time Coach of the Year award winner.
The four-time SEA Games gold medallist was also the recipient of the Public Service Medal in 2000.
