ALOR SETAR: A bridegroom to-be and another man were detained by police in connection with several petrol kiosk robberies in Kota Setar and Jitra in Kedah and Kangar in Perlis. Kota Setar OCPD Assistant Comm Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the men, aged 25 and 22, were arrested on Oct 7 and Oct 8.

He said the 25-year-old man was arrested in Pokok Sena at about 5.30pm while the other man was arrested at about the same time in Gunung Keriang. The 22-year-old man was detained two days before his wedding. ACP Abdul Ghafar said the man was also wanted by the police to facilitate investigation into a rape case in Kuala Nerang.

“The two men who are good friends, are believed to be involved in 19 armed robbery cases at several petrol stations and a mini-market involving a loss of RM35,000 between April and October this year,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

He said the duo were armed with two fake pistols, a parang and a knife. ACP Abdul Ghafar said that police also seized three motorcycles that were believed to have been used by the two men to carry out their criminal activities.

“Their modus operandi was for one of them to enter a petrol station to rob while the other would wait at their motorcycle. “They would change the motorcycle registration plate number to avoid detection,” he said. The two men have been remanded until Oct 25.
