Spain 2010 was fortunate to have recovered from that early Swiss defeat and kept on grinding out single-goal margins all the way. Nowhere near the best the world has ever seen. It was almost like Greece winning Euro 2004.

My vote for the greatest ever is Italy 1982. It wasn't only about Dino Zoff in goal and Paolo Rossi in front. The whole team came alive from a lacklustre first round to bulldoze over Argentina (with Diego Maradona et al), Brazil (with Zico et al), Poland (with Zbigniew Boniek et al) and West Germany (with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge et al) in style. I don't think any other team can boast such a tsunamic streak on the way to the ultimate trophy.
