YAN - Years after dropping out of school at age 15 to care for her siblings, 55-year-old grandmother Hasanah Abdullah has gone back to school.

Hasanah, a Kafa teacher at the Al-Amin Mosque in Sungai Layar, Sungai Petani, is among the 70 mature candidates sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination at SMK Guar Chempedak, near here, yesterday.

"I am thrilled to finally be able to achieve my dream. I hope to excel in the SPM and enter university.

"When my mother died, I had to drop out of school to look after my siblings. We also had financial problems and I took over the role of my mother," said the grandmother of three.

All the mature candidates are al-Quran and Fardhu Ain (Kafa) teachers, ranging from those in their 30s up till 55.

Another candidate, Mahmud Sri Wijaya Othman, 48, said he was inspired by his 18-year-old eldest son Al-Kausar to sit for the examination.

"I dropped out in Standard Six and went to an Arab school. I'm grateful to my son for helping me in my studies and my family for their support," said the father of five, who is a Kafa teacher at SK Tanjung Dawai in Sungai Petani.
