Graft accused's 6-month jail term cut to 6 weeks

The boss of a firm who offered a bribe to a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) officer has had his jail term cut from six months to six weeks on appeal.
Khairul Shah A. Abrahim, the 28-year-old boss of Parvin Engineering & Transport, along with MOM officer M. Jayabalan, 43, had each been given six-month jail terms early this year.
A middleman named Madavakhandam Panjanathann, who hooked the two parties up and passed the $3,000 from Khairul Shah to Jayabalan, was not charged in the case.
On Tuesday, Justice V. K. Rajah indicated that he was not impressed by the decision to overlook the middleman's role, saying: 'Without Mr Madavakhandam, there would be no offence.'
