When you buy a smart phone or PDA, the provider usually have
some exclusive firmware flashed within the ROM to activate the GPRS
easily, even when you have switched off your GPRS service setings.

And you may not know about it and end up with a big bill as a surprise.

There is a very small free software called NoData that can be easily installed
in your phone device and when it is activated, it completely prevent
the GPRS service from being activated without your knowledge.

The program is available for a few mobile phone operating systems.

You can download from this site.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U75OD13X

After you install this prog, an Icon will appear on your screen "NoData".

Click on it to activate and it will show you all the 3 types of GPRS services.
MMS, Video and Data. Set all three services to "Disable" mode.
Thats it.

Make sure that you do this everytime you change your SIM card
( example when you reach overseas or hard reset your phone ).

Howeve you can still use any WiFi service without any problem.

For good measure, when you switch on your fone overseas
just do a quick check to see if the NoData settings are still
in "disable" mode.

---

BTW- My freind just paid over 300 bucks for unwanted GPRS service.!

The NoData software is only for Windows Mobile if i am not wrong. I have been using it for a few months already. No problems at all and does a great job of shutting down your GPRS.

If your handphones were purchased under contract directly from network operators e.g. Sinktel / Starhub / M1, their settings including GPRS can be more likely been setup before sales since they are both the network operator as well as the handphone seller, this is likely that they Bao Kah Liao and do everything. Otherwise if you purchased handphones & your network services separately - like me then there is no way it could had come with settings such as GPRS & MMS already setup inside, because each network's settings are different.

This means you have to check & turn them off (delete the profiles or modify the settings until they won't work e.g. gateway IP set to 127.0.0.0, when your phone was supplied by M1 / Starhub / Sinktel. Otherwise, you mostly don't have the workable settings unless someone or yourself had done auto settings like SMS to 109 or 104 etc.

A caution is that some handphone models have got a Kay-Poh initial setup wizard that will carry out step by step auto setup when 1st used. That Kay-Poh could had GPRS setup done. But you can check.

Years back there were international headlines when an Ang Moh Idiot from USA went roaming in Asia for a month and downloading his favorite TV show to watch daily, and got a bill like few hundred thousand dollars.
