Libya's government is still trying to wrestle control of eastern areas from militias who took up arms against the Gaddafi regime.

Western powers warn groups like al-Qaeda are taking advantage of the security vacuum.

Derna is a conservative city and it has a religious society. al-Qaeda as an organisation does not exist there but many individuals sympathise with their ideology.
