Government gazette publishes boundaries of altered polling districts for GRCs, SMCs

SINGAPORE: A day after the Elections Department announced that the Register of Voters is being revised, the government gazette has published the boundaries of altered polling districts.

This is for the 14 group representation constituencies (GRCs) and nine single-member constituencies (SMCs).

The announcement noted the altered polling districts of every electoral division and acknowledged that the details were published.

It is believed to be the precursor of the Electoral Boundaries Report, which is normally released before an election.

The government has announced plans to increase the number of SMCs and introduce a cooling-off day at the close of campaigning, before voters go to the polls.

For this, Singapore's Constitution and Parliamentary Elections Act has to be amended, before the boundaries come into force for the next general election, not due till February 2012.

The last general election was held on 6 May 2006.

This time how do PAP know where to re-draw the boundaries?

Bear with me with my meager knowledge in election politics. I assume in the past, boundaries are drawn base on:

1. Actual number of voters voted for PAP in each block and each street in every precinct.
2. Deduce from 1. They are able to give a fairly accurate picture of which group that favours them ( eg. Malay is no 1, followed by young voters etc.. )

Since the last election, PAP with their policies has managed to screw up every conceivable group IMO.

1. FT - Malays, PMets, young graduates are most affected
2. High Property prices - Young family and upgraders
3. Mini-bombs saga - High income earners
4. Temasek & GIC losses - Punters
5. Casino - Religious group, certain segments are dead against it
6. ERP - motorist
7. High basic food prices - almost every average Joe
..
Besides, with the number of walkovers for so many past elections, where are they going to pluck the numbers from?

Any insight?

It's more and more difficult for MIWs on where to re-draw the boundaries that is advantage to them since most of the ppl are affected by their bad policies.
