Other bloggers also weighed in on this. Looks like GN has pissed quite a few people off (and very rightly so).
Looks like stupidity and lack of human decency truly knows no bounds.
See for example this authors' commentary:

On Sunday, former Singapore opposition politician turned Californian lawyer Gopalan Nair perpetrated an idiotic prank in which he alleged that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had suffered a heart attack and had been warded at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
But barely 24 hours later, he revealed that it had been a hoax and that he was gratified by the reaction that the blogosphere had provided him. In other words, he shamelessly wallowed in his own amusement at the expense of others.
I strongly condemn and denounce the despicable act of misinformation perpetrated by Gopalan Nair and call upon the blogosphere to similarly castigate and boycott his writings henceforth.

Gopalan Nair's character is fully revealed in this episode. If ever the foreign press takes him as a credible person, this episode must be used against him to demonstrate his character.
Not only had Gopalan Nair revealed himself to be a cowardly character, coming to Singapore to take on MM Lee Kuan Yew - a person far above him in character, integrity and stature, Gopalan also ran off with his cock shrank and balls shrivelled and now satisfies himself by throwing stones from abroad. May his stones be cut off too.
Despicable man.
we had the likes of MG Guru
I thought MG Guru was a likable and affiliable person?
Yet they continue to portray him as just another opposition figure, no different to many of the honest opposition chaps that try to make a difference to Singapore.
but to come together to publicly disown, disassociate charlatans and ineffectual individuals from main stream opposition cause and to take the local press to task for portraying such chaps as opposition leaders or leading lights.
Very brave & sensible suggestion.
Back to the political front, don't have to look far. Our own forum as an analogy.
If a less than positive post even if objective/commonsensical comment made on any opp figure, immediately attract crticism from the mild (..we should not make opp look bad...) to the extreme (.. you are a shapeshifting pappie dog go lick yr masters lumpar etc etc ).
Narrow thinking - small minds - self-righteous - McCarthy style persecution - the works.
Totally uncivilized.
I find such behaviour repugnant & disincentive to honest intellectual engagement of ideas.
So your suggestion to fellow opposition leaders or opposition supporters to expose unworthy charlatans who will taint the name & cause of the opposition
........unlikely to happen unless this cynical groupthink can be dismantled.
Gopalan is a non-issue. He is no longer a Singaporean, just an American now. He is "FINISHED" politically in Singapore. Why should we bother?
But what he has done is bad for Singapore internet activists as a whole, not particularly opposition. PAP has been reminding Singaporeans that the information provided in internet is unreliable and he has just given PAP more ammo to reinforce that perception. Sigh. What a foolish fellow. Opposition needed the internet platform to counter the imbalance in the main stream media but he has basically made it weaker with his incredibly stupid hoax.

He might have been an opposition candidate last time, but that is already the past. He might have his grudges with PAP and even the old man, but that is his problem.

Much as what you said is true, but public perception at large see him as an opposition or ex-opposition more than an American or ex-Singaporean. And you can be sure 151th will come out to reinforce this perception. I expect one full page dedicated to this issue by one of the Toa Payoh whore in the next week or two.
It better for oppositions to take a proactive step and issue a statement in order to distance themselves from this fellow.
The Straits Time will definitely write about this story. I first read about it on the Chinese evening tabloid tonight. ST reporter called me for comment, saying that someone by the name Bryan T has been sending emails to the press and other people to "pressure" opposition to condemn Gopalan. This Bryan T has been active in SDP website writing critical things about them. Bryan T has also been actively critical about other opposition parties on the net. So I don't think he is that concerned about the well being of opposition at all.
Anyway, I told that ST reporter the same, this is a non-issue as Gopalan is no longer a Singaporean. PAP stand is quite clear, foreigners should not meddle with Singapore's politics but yet, they are trying to use a foreigner to paint Singapore opposition party black? The headline on the evening papers is "EX-WP Candidate....." See my point?
That is why my response is pretty clear, he is no longer Singaporean, a non-issue. Period.
But it seems that the ST editors feel that it is a big issue... a big issue a foreigner making up a hoax on LKY!
