On Sunday, former Singapore opposition politician turned Californian lawyer Gopalan Nair perpetrated an idiotic prank in which he alleged that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had suffered a heart attack and had been warded at Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
But barely 24 hours later, he revealed that it had been a hoax and that he was gratified by the reaction that the blogosphere had provided him. In other words, he shamelessly wallowed in his own amusement at the expense of others.
I strongly condemn and denounce the despicable act of misinformation perpetrated by Gopalan Nair and call upon the blogosphere to similarly castigate and boycott his writings henceforth.

With the US Tea Partiers growing strong based on their claims of Death panels and Hitler Death camps under Obama, it's no wonder lunatics like Nair run to the US of A.
Good thing he did the hoax, because I thought he was an honest man after being charged by the Singapore court and went to jail, hence I was just days away to give him outright US$2 million to expand his political operation base in USA.
My wife and daughter was aready in Las Vegas over the weekend and I wanted them to go over to his office and hand him the bank draft of the first $2 million as I told my wofe we do not need so much money and this lawyer looks like a good man.

Its interesting how the lack of a free press does a great disservice to not only the opposition but the rest of Singpapore. Gopalan's conduct and lack of integrity is well known way back in the 1980s.
I am aware that SPH folks like Kor Kian Beng and the rest over the years are familiar with this chap. I am also aware the some opposition figures have revealed what had happenned with finances raised the last time he was here. Yet they continue to portray him as just another opposition figure, no different to many of the honest opposition chaps that try to make a difference to Singapore.
As a country we had the great misfortune to have charlatans take centre stage in opposition politics to the great benefit of the PAP. We use to laugh at Harbans Singh and his mistress forming the shadow cabinet, we had the likes of MG Guru and Tan Lead Shake, Uncle Yap grabbing headlines over silly things, we had the foreign press and foreign governments identifying Chee as the opposition leader when he was thrashed in ever increasing margins and scoring worst than any other opposition candidates and never making it in to parliament albeit in his case as an ineffectual candidate that fails to engage the local populace etc.
I just dread the thought that there will be another clown, puppet or ineffectual individual waiting in the horizon to be dressed up by the local press as another leading opposition figure and damaging the oppostion cause at every turn.
I am not sure if this is the right thing but it may prove prudent for the opposition parties not only to meet to avoid 3 corner fights but to come together to publicly disown, disassociate charlatans and ineffectual individuals from main stream opposition cause and to take the local press to task for portraying such chaps as opposition leaders or leading lights.

He is indeed. However when he stood against old man in Tanjong Pagar he made a mockery of the system. When interviewed after filing his nomination papers he responded that he admired the old man and left it at that. Did not even bother to campaign.
I think you do realise that he went to jail and was disqualified for quite a long time. Thus the image of the opposition is being tarnished.

But it is like Vivien's suggestion that religious leaders should take on the onus to speak up against any fellow leader who have transgressed .... is that realistic though laudable ?

Gopalan is a non-issue. He is no longer a Singaporean, just an American now. He is "FINISHED" politically in Singapore. Why should we bother?

But what he has done is bad for Singapore internet activists as a whole, not particularly opposition. PAP has been reminding Singaporeans that the information provided in internet is unreliable and he has just given PAP more ammo to reinforce that perception. Sigh. What a foolish fellow. Opposition needed the internet platform to counter the imbalance in the main stream media but he has basically made it weaker with his incredibly stupid hoax.

When he landed in trouble during his last visit, it appeared clearly as an opposition figure with some opposition identities behind him especially those associated with SDP. The marriage might have fallen thru but the divorce has not been announced publicly.
I am aware that its Singaporean thing to keep this quiet but it does no one any any good. Interestingly It was a PAP associate Choo that came out with first criticism. Ejay also appeared to support Choo and TOC rather than the opposition. One thing is for sure, the public does not associate the PAP with Gopalan so Choo's and Ejay's message does not clear the air.

Much as what you said is true, but public perception at large see him as an opposition or ex-opposition more than an American or ex-Singaporean. And you can be sure 151th will come out to reinforce this perception. I expect one full page dedicated to this issue by one of the Toa Payoh whore in the next week or two.

It really about perception management rather than the "holy truth".
Human have selective perception. They want the public to see the cup is half full whereas opposition wants the them to view it as half empty. If they can manipulate the general public to see the cup as half full instead of half empty, then it a big issue.
GN have done opposition a great disservice this time.
