i prefer route 69. but u.s. 66 was hollywood’s favorite highway when it was first commissioned in 1926, 20 years before the interstate system was started (ike was cinc in europe during ww2 and saw, liked, and copied the autobahn in defeated germany). as the highway ends on the west coast in santa monica, it has the hollywood vibe. it runs from
chicago to santa monica. i was partly on the highway on the reverse route, i.e. going east northeast. the furthest i drove was from l.a. at the 101 intersection via barstow towards las vegas at the 91 intersection and then towards kingman and flagstaff in arizona. i veered off 66 and decided to go to the south rim of the grand canyon from flagstaff. never drove all the way to chicago. it’s a long 2000-mile circuitous route from az to nm to tx to ok to ks to mo and finally to il. if auntie ginger wishes to join me on the next drive let me know, and we can take the porsche for a multi-state spin.
