Poker gang 'stupid amateurs': German police
05:45 AEST Tue Mar 9 2010

An armed gang that staged a brazen heist on a $7m poker championship were amateurs and will be caught soon, the head of the German police union has said.

While a police spokeswoman said there were no firm leads yet, police union chief Rainer Wendt told NTV television: "As for the perpetrators, one has to say: this was clearly not the work of professionals."

"The way they were armed and behaved, as well as the mountain of evidence they left behind already indicates that the police will quickly identify them," he added.

He said the gang had plumbed "new depths of stupidity to carry out such a raid in front of running surveillance cameras."

At around 2:15 pm on Saturday, the masked gang of four burst into the Grand Hyatt hotel in central Berlin, wielding machetes and handguns and made off with 242,000 euros (A$362,000) in cash, police said.

There are still "no hot leads" on the robbers, a police spokeswoman told AFP Monday although investigators are "confident" that the "relatively large amount of material" they are sifting through will soon result in hard evidence.

The tournament began with around 950 participants, including German tennis legend Boris Becker.

After five days, American online poker star Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee carried off the $1.47m top prize.

As for the fugitives, Wendt advised them: "Go to the police, bring the cash bags and make a full confession."

"Maybe you'll get a few less years in prison."
