Mr Lee was also asked for his take on a recent media report that at least three opposition parties were eyeing National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan's ward with the aim of making public housing affordability an election issue.

He explained: “What is affordabilty? From the point of view of the buyer? And the government that is subsidising you? The government has to price it at a level that is fair to the revenue it is collecting and fair to the individual, not only the present buyer but past and future buyers. If Mr Mah is unable to defend himself, he deserves to lose.

“No country in the world has given its citizens and families an asset as valuable as what we have given every family here. And if you say that policy is at fault, you must be daft."

Mr Lee was speaking before some 500 delegates from 20 countries at a housing conference. - CNA/vm

TAMPINES GRC is shaping up to be a hot spot in the next general election, with at least three opposition parties keen to contest the five-MP constituency.

What draws them is the People's Action Party's (PAP) anchor minister helming the group representation constituency - National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan.

Why? They are convinced there is some unhappiness on the ground over housing and the contest would give them the opportunity to hit out at housing policies, particularly the affordability of public housing.

What asset? Free national service? GST to help the poor?

I am giving Mah Bow Tan some credits.
He has fought and won 4 elections in Tampines GRC since 1988 over a 20 years period.
Few PAP MPs have 4 elections victory in their CVs

There are some clown MPs in Tanjong Pagar, Marine Parade, Bishan-Toa Payoh GRCs who never gained a single peasants vote for 20 years. Some PAP MPs are serving their 2nd/3rd terms/ 10+ years as a MP and never fought a election battle before.

give Mah Bow Tan a break. Those PAP MPs at Tanjong Pagar, Marine Parade, Bishan-Toa Payoh are begging for the oppositions to come and contest. :D

I will give a proper respond to MM Lee later and he deserves a proper response.

But a quick one, this is the first time I hear PAP leaders, especially from MM Lee himself that a minister deserves to lose if he cannot defend himself or his policies.

PAP as the ruling party, has always stressed that they take "COLLECTIVE LEADERSHIP" which means, "COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY" for all their policies. That is why whenever a minister is at risk during the poll, all the big guns will zoom in and help out.

It is indeed refreshing that the icon of PAP leadership MM Lee is practically saying that now Mah BT is on his own to defend himself, no more "collective leadership" or "collective responsibility". Intriguing indeed.

SDP eyeing Tampines GRC
Singapore Democratic Party is eyeing Tampines GRC in the upcoming General Elections, reported The Straits Times.

"The Straits Times understands that the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has approached the NSP, saying it may be keen to contest in Tampines GRC."

Other than the National Solidarity Party (NSP), the Reform Party and the Workers' Party are also interested in fielding candidates for Tampines GRC.

In the General Election 2006, the GRC was contested by both PAP and Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), which the NSP was part of it then.

NotMySDP understands that the Tampines GRC turf has been worked by NSP and the WP over the years. NSP has fielded candidates in the Tampines GRC, while WP has always been active in the Northeast region. SDP has never contested in the area before.

As to why SDP is jumping on Tampines GRC, the best explanation is:

Asked about the opposition challenge, Tampines GRC MP Ong Kian Min said: ‘They are interested because this is a small and compact space. With their limited resources, it helps when they don’t need to spread out to cover the area.’

What else to expect from opportunistic SDP? Besides selling the party newspapers, visiting prisons, and attending international forums, the SDP has not did their ground work in Tampines.

I do not read it that way.

I read MM Lee as saying that MBT should be competent enough to defend his turf. Competent enough to communicate the basis of his policies and win support for it.

If he lacks the competence, then he deserves to lose, in the same sense as a commando need to function effectively on his own under fire.

Unlike your analysis, that however does not preclude the commando's officers from coming in to help.

You are right, if Mah is competent enough... that is IF. But Mah already conceded that he was "caught off guard". That's competency for you.

I don't define 'competency' as 'never being caught off-guard'.

Still Mah Bow Tan should do more for Tampines' residents and prove his real worth to them.

He has six months.

Very good questions. Withholding its citizens' CPFs and making them slog their shits out as mortgage slaves and he called that given. Damn him to hell.

The rich is getting richer, the poor is getting poorer and with the influx of FTs the poors are literary abandoned let alone given. Damn him to hell again.
