Delroy Grant was charged with five rapes, six indecent assaults and 11 burglaries between 1992 and 2009, after his arrest on Sunday, police said.

He will appear in Greenwich Magistrates' Court in London later on Monday.

"Officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command at New Scotland Yard have today charged a man under the Operation Minstead investigation," police said in a statement.

Police from Operation Minstead have long been investigating more than 100 burglaries and sex attacks on elderly men and women in their homes across southeast London.

During their investigation dating back to the 1990s, police have said they were seeking a criminal, dubbed the "night stalker" by the media, with a distinctive pattern of behaviour.

The unknown attacker often disabled telephone lines and fuse boxes before breaking into the homes of vulnerable people. Light bulbs have also been removed and curtains drawn, they have said.

Often wearing a mask, the attacker woke people by shining a torch in their faces. Police have said he sometimes spent up to four hours with his victims, some of whom, aged between 68 and 93, have been raped and sexually assaulted.

A £40,000 reward was also offered for information about his identity.

Earlier this month, police revealed that more than 2,054 DNA samples had been obtained from suspects as part of their inquiry at a cost of £102,700.

The 108 attacks and burglaries allegedly took place in clusters in south and southeast London in areas including Dulwich, Orpington, Norwood, Downham, Lee, West Wickham and Bickley.

Police have been investigating more than 100 attacks on the elderly in London dating back to the 1990s.

Victims of the man dubbed the "night-stalker" were men and women aged between 68 and 93.

A spokesman for the Met Police said a 52-year-old man was in custody at a police station in the capital.

He was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning following a pre-planned operation, the spokesman added.

Sky News understands the man was approached by police as he returned to a car in Brockley, southeast London.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said detectives have described the arrest as "significant".

"They are very confident that they are going to charge this suspect," he said.

"It's been a very complicated investigation and an unusual one. Police have always felt this series of attacks was the work of one man.

"We're talking over 100 burglaries and perhaps as many as a couple of dozen sex assaults of the people who've been burgled.

"The arrest came after a recent and prolific wave of more attacks - attacks that haven't been publicised by Scotland Yard, simply because they realised they were getting good information on their suspect.

"In the words of one detective, this man - the night-stalker - was getting 'blasé'."

Brunt added that detectives with Operation Minstead have long been convinced the man they were looking for was a black man.

Police had even travelled to the Caribbean because DNA tests suggested the attackers origins were from the Windward Islands.

Earlier this month, the Met Police revealed more than 2,000 DNA samples had been collected from suspects as part of the 12-year inquiry at a cost of more than £100,000.
