Malaysia’s king has arrived in Beijing for a four-day trip to China – the first by the country’s monarch in a decade and his first overseas state visit since being crowned in July – as the two countries celebrate a half-century of bilateral ties.

Talks were expected to range from cooperation on high-speed rail to the implementation of a slew of deals signed earlier this year, though the two sides were unlikely to announce any new projects, an analyst said.

Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar’s visit marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. A previous monarch, the late Sultan Abdul Halim, visited on the 40-year mark in 2014.

Sultan Ibrahim and his family are the rulers of Johor, the southern Malaysian state just across from Singapore. Among other holdings, Sultan Ibrahim has a stake in Forest City, a US$100 billion development project off the coast of Johor led by Chinese investors.

“The king, who is also the sultan of Johor, may invite Chinese companies to participate in the high-speed rail project between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore – a significant portion of the line passes through Johor,” Koh said.

Sultan Ibrahim is also likely to share plans for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, announced in January, which aims to strengthen business ties and increase connectivity between the two countries.

Koh said Sultan Ibrahim’s visit would be “no ordinary state visit by a Malaysian leader”, noting the Johor royal family’s lengthy relationship with China. For example, Sultan Abu Bakar, Sultan Ibrahim’s great-great-grandfather, was awarded the prestigious Imperial Order of the Double Dragon by the emperor of China’s Qing dynasty in 1892.

Malaysia is offering 0% tax rate for family offices to set up shop in its struggling mega-project Forest City, as it looks to revive investor interest in the $100 billion development near its border with Singapore.
The government is also offering a concessionary corporate tax rate of between 0% and 5%, and individual income tax rate of 15% for knowledge workers and Malaysians working there, Malaysia’s Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan said in Johor state on Friday.
