Despite the public appearance of a strong friendship, President Joe Biden privately sparred with Benjamin Netanyahu several times over the Israeli prime minister’s lack of strategy in Gaza, as documented in a new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward.
Woodward’s book, “War,” reveals new details about both Biden and former President Donald Trump’s sometimes expletive-laden statements to and about certain world leaders — like Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin — while facing multiple international crises. The book’s release date is Oct. 15, but CNN published some excerpts it obtained on Tuesday.
It has been one year since Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and capturing around 240 — about 100 of whom remain in captivity, a third of whom are presumed dead. In response, the Israeli military continues to rain chaos and havoc on Palestinians in Gaza, killing about 42,000 people, displacing nearly the entire population of 2.3 million and collapsing the territory’s whole health care system.

  • Israeli defence minister drops plan to visit Washington this week
JERUSALEM/BEIRUT, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday Israeli airstrikes had killed two successors to Hezbollah's slain leader, as Israel expanded its ground offensive against the Iran-backed group with a fourth army division deployed into south Lebanon.
Netanyahu spoke in a video released by his office hours after the deputy leader of Hezbollah, which is reeling after a spate of killings of senior commanders in Israeli airstrikes, left the door open to a negotiated ceasefire.

Netanyahu and Biden to hold call on Iran Wednesday after weeks of silence

US President Joe Biden will hold a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to discuss Israel’s plans to retaliate against Iran for its October 1 ballistic missile attack, Netanyahu’s office confirmed, amid reports of growing frustration in Washington over Jerusalem’s unwillingness to share details of its intentions.

The US, along with the Middle East, has been on edge awaiting Israel’s response to the roughly 200 ballistic missiles launched by Tehran last week, and has been trying to dissuade it from mounting a response that it would view as disproportionate.

This has compounded growing frustration in Washington, US officials with knowledge on the matter said, which has found itself blindsided by actions Israel has taken against the Hezbollah terror group in recent weeks, including the assassination of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

The lack of communication led to a blunt exchange between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant when Gallant phoned his counterpart on September 27 to inform him of the strike on Nasrallah after the fact.
