The Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry has recalled its ambassador from Canada and given the Canadian ambassador 24 hours to leave the country. Riyadh is also freezing all new trade and investment deals with Canada.
The decision was reported by Saudi Arabia's official Saudi Press Agency. It is understood to be in response to Canada's statement of concern over the arrests of human rights activists in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued by the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry, Riyadh dismissed as "totally false" allegations by the Canadian authorities that recent arrests of several civil society activists were unwarranted.

Saudi Arabia allows women to enter legal field, joining 13,000 private notaries
It said the arrests were made by "the competent authorities" and detainees were provided with all rights guaranteed during investigative and trial stages. The ministry denounced Canada’s stance as “explicit interference in the internal affairs” of the kingdom, which runs “contrary to the most basic international norms and charters that govern relations between countries.”
Besides putting on hold “all new trade and investment transactions with Canada,” the ministry said that the ultra-conservative kingdom, which has drawn stark criticism from human rights groups for its crackdown on dissent, “retains the right to take further action.”
On Friday, Canada called on Riyadh to “immediately release” civil and human rights activists recently arrested by the Saudi Arabian authorities, including Samar Badawi, an internationally recognized human rights defender. Badawi and another high-profile Saudi women's rights activist, Nassima al-Sadah, were arrested in the kingdom last week, sparking international outcry.
In 2012, Badawi received an international Women of Courage award in a ceremony in Washington from former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then-First Lady Michelle Obama.
The UN has also voiced concern over the widening clampdown on opposition in Saudi Arabia, with its human rights office (OHCHR) calling the spate of arrests since spring “apparently arbitrary detentions.” Since May 15, at least 15 critics of the Saudi government have been detained, the office noted on Tuesday.

A Saudi Arabian social media creative group has published a picture of an Air Canada flight moving towards the CN Tower, accompanied by a warning to the Canadian government.
The picture was produced by a group called @Infographic_KSA, which describes itself as a project “managed by a group of Saudi youth who are interested in technology and social media Facts backed by numbers & evidence”. Its online presence is mostly on Twitter, Instagram and Telegram.

Full poster posted by @Infographic_KSA on Twitter
The poster was produced amid a diplomatic spat between Canada and Saudi Arabia over Ottawa’s criticism of the Arab kingdom’s treatment of human rights activists. It shows the picture alongside a message: “Sticking one’s nose where it doesn’t belong! As the Arab saying goes: ‘He who interferes with what doesn’t concern him finds what doesn’t please him’.” There are also versions in languages other than English.

The work doesn’t clarify what exactly would not please the Canadians, but the connotation with the terrorist hijacking of planes and ramming them into the World Trade Center towers didn’t escape many Twitter commenters.

The tweet has since been removed, as were the pictures on Instagram.

Saudi Arabia is selling off Canadian securities in response to Ottawa’s criticism of the arrest of a female activist, the Financial Times reports. Riyadh says it's ready to take the step despite possible financial losses.
According to the newspaper, Saudi Arabia’s overseas asset managers were told to dump Canadian equities, bonds and cash holdings “no matter the cost.” Saudi Arabia is not a major investor in Canada, according to the FT source, but the Kingdom wants to send a strong signal to authorities in Ottawa.

Saudi airline stops flights to Canada amid escalating diplomatic row
The diplomatic rift between the two countries began after Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland demanded the release from prison of Saudi women’s rights activist Samar Badawi, who has family in Canada.
Riyadh said the Canadian demand was “a blatant interference in the Kingdom’s domestic affairs, against basic international norms and all international protocols.”
“The Kingdom views the Canadian position as an affront to the Kingdom that requires a sharp response to prevent any party from attempting to meddle with Saudi sovereignty,”
according to a statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia's national airline Saudia halted all direct flights to and from Toronto following Canada’s intervention. Toronto is the only Canadian destination Saudia serves.
Saudi Arabia has ordered all Canadian grain purchases to be stopped, adding it will no longer buy Canadian-origin grains. The Saudi government has also stopped all medical treatment programs in Canada and moved Saudi scholarship recipients to other countries. The Canadian dollar reacted negatively to the news, declining 0.12 percent against the US dollar to just under 0.77 cents.
Saudi Arabia has already expelled the Canadian ambassador.
