Chinese authorities are ordering Muslims in the country to hand over their prayer mats and copies of the Quran or else face punishment, it has been reported.

Officials in Xinjiang province have warned members of the Uyghur ethnic minority they must surrender religious items on pain of "harsh punishments", according to an exile leader.

"We received a notification saying that every single ethnic Uyghur must hand in any Islam-related items from their own home, including Qurans, prayers and anything else bearing the symbols of religion," Dilxat Raxit, of the exile World Uyghur Congress, told Radio Free Asia (RFA), which is operated by the US government.

The directive also applies to ethnic Kazakh and Kyrgyz Muslims, RFA said. It was reportedly announced via the WeChat social network.

In its update on China in 2016 and 2017, Amnesty International said the communist Beijing government "continued to violate the right to freedom of religion, and crack down on all unauthorised religious gatherings" in the region, and to detain Uyghur writers.


Tension between Uighurs and Han Chinese boiled over in 2009, leading to violence that left scores dead.


Hundreds of people have died in the protracted conflict between separatists and the Chinese government in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, its full name, which sits on China’s far north-western border.

Beijing has blamed the problems on Islamist militants, though rights organisations say the violence is in reaction to repressive Chinese policy. Rebels claim the region has been illegally occupied since 1949.

Peaceful protests have taken place alongside bombings and other violent attacks on Chinese security forces and institutions

Religious followers have the freedom to choose and practice a faith only if it does not harm on infringe on the welfare of the wider community in general - otherwise, as demonstrated by many fundamentalist Islamic nutcases, this right should be taken away from them. Islamic fundamentalist extremists have set Islam against the rest of the world - there is a reason why only Islam is the only religion at war with the world at large.

Double standard at play here. When Muslims create trouble in Western countries, they're almost invariably labelled as 'terrorists', 'jihadis' and 'extremists'. When they cause trouble in China, they're called 'freedom fighters' and 'rebels'.

Fact is, Islamic civilization — both Shia and Sunni — is undergoing a reactionary and particularly virulent evolutionary phase throughout the world. Islamic communities everywhere are being Arabized and Wahhabised and seeking to establish their own Shariah state that doesn't answer to the secular laws in the countries they reside. They see it as a jihad against the kafirs (particularly the Western world) and do not hesitate to resort to terrorism and violence to achieve their means.

The causes of this fundamentalist swing are complex, and the US and the West have to share a large portion of the blame, especially vis-à-vis their schizophrenic and exploitative foreign policies in the Middle East. They have their hands full tackling the 'Islamic problem', but their media's hypocritical reporting of insurgencies in non-allied nations does not help.

I know that PRC has built muslims canteens for students at their best state schools to accommodate their muslim students. They have also built mosques.

The news come from British gossip tabloids, for many of their articles are just trash. I read South China Morning Post & there is no mention of this news nor on any American News Site or even the star in Malaysia. If this is true, PRC's embassies in Malaysia & Indonesia & the middle east countries, Africa etc..will be swamped with Muslims Protestors.

It is interesting why ISIS - which is fighting on so many fronts in the Middle East and the Maghreb - has the wherewithal to infiltrate and train militants in Russia (North Caucasus) and China (Xinjiang) without Western reprisal. It is obvious this is part of a concerted US campaign to destabilize the two countries, all the while decrying "Islamic terrorism" in its official foreign policy narrative. And the western media is complicit in this sham hypocrisy.

Hence one man's "terrorist" is another's "freedom fighter".

Less obvious but even more interesting - something that many here can't grasp - is that ISIS, the supposed scourge of the free world everywhere, happens to be arrayed against enemies of the US: Hezbollah in Lebanon, Assad in Syria, Egypt's military junta, while bypassing US allies like Israel and Saudi.

And where's all their money, weapons, logistics, intel, etc coming from?
