SINGAPORE - A glass panel shattered on an east-bound train near Tanjong Pagar MRT station on Sunday.

Train passenger Shah, who captured the incident in photos, told citizen journalism website Stomp that he heard "a loud noise" when the glass broke.

"Luckily, no one was injured," he said.

SMRT confirmed that the glass side panel of a train travelling towards Pasir Ris station shattered at around 6pm on Sunday.

"SMRT staff boarded the train at Lavender MRT station to inspect the damage and secure the area. No injuries were sustained in the incident and the train was withdrawn from service," said Mr Patrick Nathan, vice-president of corporate information and communications.

The incident is being investigated, SMRT said.

While the panels in SMRT trains are made of tempered glass, which is stronger than normal glass, they have been known to shatter.

The last reported incident of this happening on an SMRT train was in May 2012.
