Police have arrested a 19-year old female for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On January 29, 2013, at about 8.48 pm, police received a call from a resident informing that her main gate had been locked with a bicycle lock and that the suspect has been detained by the neighbor in the vicinity of Yishun Street 61.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested the girl after a brief interview for loanshark harassment.
Loanshark-related paraphernalia, such as mobile phones containing debtors’ information, cans of paint, gloves and a marker were found in the suspect’s possession.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the culprit had carried out acts of harassment by locking debtors’ units using bicycle locks, splashing paint at debtors’ units and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls.
She will be charged in Court on Jan 31 for loanshark harassment.
Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment may be jailed for a term not exceeding 5 years, and fined between $5,000 and $50,000, and will also be liable to caning of between 3 and 6 strokes.
