<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->IT WAS a sobering reminder by our founding father Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew of the Government's duty to protect minorities and the special position of Malays as he refuted the argument by Nominated MP Viswa Sadasivan as false and flawed in last Thursday's report, 'Dangerous to let highfalutin ideas go undemolished'.
I hope younger Singaporeans have not lost the social and moral values a civil society should espouse - compassion and consideration for minorities and the indigenous group in our midst.
Governing a country is different from managing a commercial business. Besides implementing national policies that ensure the common good of the people, the Government also pays attention to racial and religious sensitivities. Any mismanagement of its responsibilities by the Government will wreck the precarious balance and create social discord.
In contrast, profit concerns of the board and senior management in a commercial business naturally teach the corporate culture of rewarding the strong and removing the weak. The corporate goal can be as cold as cash when it comes to matters of compassion and grace.
I hope Singaporeans learn to show grace and compassion to minorities as well as the weak and less fortunate as we prosper together.
