North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Interior Herbert Reul has announced that a massive police presence is planned during the upcoming Carnival celebrations in his federal state. Reul told the Cologne city Anzeiger that a total of around 62,000 police forces should be deployed in the countryside on the event days of the carnival. The reason for this is the threat of Islamist attacks.
Reul stressed towards media representatives that the risk of attacks was rarely as high as they are today – due to the global political situation surrounding the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. He encouraged the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia to celebrate carnival despite the safety concerns, and advised to report suspected activities to the police.
