THE police are carrying out "very thorough" investigations into the hit-and-run accident linked to a Romanian diplomat, said Foreign Minister George Yeo on Monday.
Speaking to reporters at the Indonesian Embassy after signing the condolence book for former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, who died last week, Mr Yeo said: "What happened was very bad. A man was killed. People were injured. The police are pursuing the matter very thoroughly but investigations are still ongoing and I shall not be commenting on them."
Asked when would the matter be resolved as it has been over two weeks since the accident happened on Dec 15, Mr Yeo said: "The Police are not sitting on their hands."
He said the Romanian Embassy is helping police in the probe, and there is a due process to handle the matter.
It has been established that the charge d'affairs of the Romanian Embassy here, Dr Silviu Ionescu. 49, was involved in the hit-and-run accident in Bukit Panjang, which injured three men, one of whom died on Christmas Day without regaining consciousness.
The car, with its windscreen cracked, was later found abandoned in front of an office building in Sungei Kadut. Dr Silviu Ionescu, 49, returned to Romania a few days after the accident. He told a Romanian tabloid, Click!, he would return to Singapore this month. An online petition has been set up calling on the Romanian government and its embassy here to cooperate with the Singapore authorities. It also called for payouts to be made to the families of the three victims.
