Another big step for the Chinese manufacturer. I can see lots of synergy in this $2B purchase. They can close that "safety" gap both real and perceived and give Volvo brand name an entry level car (something that they do not have at the moment). And Volvo's SUV and large sedans are idea for booming Chinese market as they can compete with main stream European manufacturers.

Swedish carmaker Volvo – renowned across Europe for its chunky, ultra-safe vehicles – is likely to fall into Chinese hands after the brand's owner, Ford, chose a consortium led by industrial group Zhejiang Geely as preferred bidder for the loss-making business.

Sources say Geely – which is China's largest independent motor manufacturer – is willing to pay about $2bn (£1.2bn) for Volvo, and is keen to build on the presence of the so-called "Swedish tanks" in the increasingly affluent Chinese car market. Premium European names such as Audi and BMW are already becoming popular on the Asian nation's roads.

A sale would be a relief to Ford, which has been trying to offload Volvo since the end of last year. The Detroit-based US company is likely to get a price well below the $6.45bn (£3.95bn) it paid for Volvo in 1999.

"Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo, and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand," said Ford's chief financial officer, Lewis Booth.

Established in Gothenburg in 1927, Volvo took its name from the Latin verb "volvere", meaning "to roll". The manufacturer employs about 20,000 staff, three quarters of whom work in Sweden. However, Volvo lost $231m (£140m) in the second quarter of 2009 and sales of its vehicles have fallen 22% in the US this year.

Craig Fitzgerald, an analyst at business advisory firm Plante & Moran in Michigan, said that Ford overpaid when it bought Volvo and then failed to build the name effectively on both sides of the Atlantic. It also struggled, until recently, with quality challenges. But he said Volvo remained a strong name: "It has a relatively clear identity for somewhat stylish, different, very safe, durable vehicles. This is a brand that can be built upon."

Geely has seen off other potential buyers for Volvo, including a US consortium called Crown – which is led by several former Ford executives. Negotiations have been prolonged by intellectual property issues – Ford is concerned about sensitive technology shared between Ford cars and Volvo vehicles in powertrain, engines and vehicle architecture. After talks in London, brokered by the investment bank Rothschild, Geely has offered to keep Volvo as a relatively autonomous unit.

Sweden's government has provided emergency aid to Volvo and rival carmaker Saab to keep them afloat as sales wane, although the country has been reluctant to take public ownership of carmakers.

The head of Volvo's engineering union, Magnus Sundemo, expressed reservations yesterday about the prospect of a Geely buyout: "My main concern is whether they have what is needed to understand Volvo culture – the way we work here and the values at Volvo."

Chinese carmakers are an increasingly influential presence in the international motor industry. General Motors recently sold its Hummer brand to China's Sichuan Tengzhong and another Chinese firm, Beijing Automotive, is taking a minority stake in Saab.

News of the potential deal emerged amid further signs of financial stress in Detroit, where General Motors' former financial arm, GMAC, is negotiating with the Treasury about a third helping of government aid. GMAC is a crucial player in financing car dealerships across the US. It has already received $12.5bn (£7.6bn) of taxpayers' money, but is struggling to raise capital needed to get its balance sheet on a stable footing.

the china man will strip the factory in europe and bring it back to china. and make china volvo.
well it will not be the safest car soon.

i bet audi will be the safest once chinese taken over.

Hope the Swedes have a decent sense of gratitude

If not for the Chinese saviour, a lot of these companies would have gone into deep trouble

The Chinese have lots of US dollar reserves that they can use for M&A and the process is hastened because US keeps printing more money and devaluing their currency

So China prefers hard tangible assets

I doubt if that is the case.

Mainland chinese buyers want an imported vehicle so it makes sense to maintain factory in Sweden. I think the deal also requires Volvo and Geely to be run as separate companies or else Swedish G might scuttle deal.

What we will see instead is lots of JV projects. Geely supply small cars to Volvo as per Volvo spec that Volvo can sell in US (currently Volvo do not have small economy cars). Volvo can contribute input on how this small car will be like (safety, design, turbo knowhow, etc). Car will be made in China.

After all when people see volvo, they think of Sweden. Just like when they see BMW they think Germany instead of South Africa (where many of our BMWs use to come from). Geely will now have basic design on a world class car which they can make and sell cheaply - same underpinnings as the Volvo economy car but cheaper materials (with Volvo equivalent having the upgraded turbo powerplant. (something like the S80 and Ford 500 / Taurus). Saab has been based on old Chevy Vectra chassis (I think).

Also I think the agreement allows now closing of current plants but is ok with opening new plant. Volvo needs Geely because it is hard to survive with such a small production qty - I think around 300K a year. With Geely they can probably go 1M a year.

Oct 29, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- VOLVY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- 29 October 2009 - Sweden's enterprise minister welcomed on Wednesday the announcement of US Ford Motor Co (NYSE: F | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) that it choose a consortium led by Chinese automobile maker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to be preferred bidder for its Swedish brand Volvo Cars.
"We welcome the information which Ford released and we note that the process is going forward. This is positive because the uncertainty has not been good for Volvo Cars," minister Maud Olofsson said at a press meeting.

"The automotive industry is undergoing a transformation and there is a big overproduction in the world. The government's wish is that we will get an owner with capital and long-term power. The Chinese market and demand there, is very strong and it is important that future owners of Volvo are represented on this market," the minister added.

Indians now own Jaguar and Land Rover, while Volvo, Humvee will be owned by Chinese.

With the high price of oil & its supplies limited. I think the days of the big cars makers are limited. Very strange that you have a 3rd world wannabes buying these brands.

Look at Korea & Japan they've built their own successful brands.

If you were to look at it, Volvo is a much better buy than Jaguar and Land Rover. With Volvo they can move down market and come out with a safe, reliable, economical small car. But with jaguar it would be unbecoming to have a cheaper small car. Also, Volvo does not have the same social status as a Jaguar and thus a small car would not "cheapen" the brand name. In fact Volvo does have small car in terms of the C30 but their production cost and low volumes make it tough.

The thing the best way for a wannabe to become a mainstream producer is to buy these companies. Purchase of Volvo means an instant global dealer network, technical knowhow, and name awareness. To try and build your name organically in an extremely competitive global market place is tough.

Trick is to make sure there is synergy with your current corp goal. At least to me Volvo is a good purchase for Chinese manufacturer with safety issues and global ambitions.

Tata's purchase of Jaguar does not seem as good an investment. Jaguar being a premium brand is difficult to plug into Tata's product line (tough to merge $2.5K Nano car with Jaguar brandname). It also requires a lot of R&D to keep up with the likes of Mercedes/BMW. Land Rover has great name awareness and many defence contracts but consumer side of things would tough given the price of oil (Range Rovers are gas hogs).

Humvee is a hopeless purchase. But then if the Chinese just want that name to be used for the Chinese market then maybe it is worth something. It would damage the Humvee brand but if they can sell enough in China .....

I doubt that the Chinese can fast track into the auto game. Look how long it took the Koreans & Japan took to develop their auto industry. Alot of management know-how & technology goes into a premium car. Its one thing to make a cheap product but another to make a premium brand name.

It'll be hard enough for the chinese to digest their new purchases but it will have to overcome their reputation for cutting corners. :)

With oil becoming a scarce commodity the chinese may have overpaid for "old" technology

"Its one thing to make a cheap product but another to make a premium brand name"

That is precisely why they want Volvo. It is a globally recognizable name, they do have some technology, especially in safety and turbocharging of small engines. Why would the Chinese pay $2B and cut corners and destroy the brand? They need not cut corners now becaue they need not compete on price (something that they were forced to do). With Volvo brand name they can have a better margin.

The Koreans took about 30 years. Hyundai was a non entity in the 70s and by late 90s they were well accepted in the US. So with Volvo the Chinese hope to do it in 20 years. It is possible. As it is Volvo now has a full line of vehicles. Main concern would be whether Geely has the finances to absorb the purchase and at the same time finance future Volvo models. So it is a good idea but Geely might not be big enough to swallow Volvo.

If you just put a value on the Volvo brand name - That alone must be worth US$500M (read that OSIM was worth S$200M). Then they have their global distribution network - stronger distributers like SM Motors in Singapore and their network in USA. That network is probably worth another US$200M. The we come to their intellectual property.
