GE: SDP to contest in three constituencies

SINGAPORE : Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan has said his party will "definitely" contest in three constituencies.
They are Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and the single-member constituencies (SMCs) of Bukit Panjang and Yuhua.
Dr Chee said his party is working on another constituency but would reveal where it is at an appropriate time.
More than 30 SDP members and supporters were on a walkabout at Ghim Moh Market on Sunday morning.
Dr Chee introduced the party's Assistant Secretary-General John Tan, Assistant Treasurer Vincent Wijeysingha, former Workers' Party candidate James Gomez, and former Internal Security Act detainee Teo Soh Lung, to residents.
Also spotted was a new face, 35-year-old Michelle Lee, whom Dr Chee introduced to residents as one of SDP's candidates.
The party has not officially announced its slate.
But Dr Chee said they are well prepared and "more than capable of taking over from the PAP (People's Action Party) team".
He said: "This election is going to be very different. Our candidates are all going to be very highly-qualified professionals, but I want you to look beyond that. Because you look into their hearts, that is where the service comes in. But you won't find them lacking in any shape or form when it comes to their credentials, their competence as compared with the PAP team."
On the National Solidarity Party's (NSP) decision not to stand in Yuhua SMC in the spirit of opposition unity, Dr Chee said this was in line with the SDP's withdrawal from Whampoa SMC.
He said: "NSP was also interested in Whampoa. We did not see the need for a three-cornered fight. So we withdrew from that, the NSP has reciprocated, then I think that is a very good strategy going forward, because that allows us to fight one-on-one with the PAP."
The SDP team also visited Yuhua Village Market and Bukit Timah Food Centre.
