GE: PAP's Lim Hwee Hua questions Hougang financials
SINGAPORE - The People's Action Party (PAP) candidate for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC), Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, has queried the Hougang Town Council's silence about its accounts, raising questions about the Workers' Party's (WP) ability to run a bigger estate.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Kaki Bukit on Monday, Mrs Lim revealed that residents from a Housing and Urban Development Company (HUDC) precinct in Hougang have not been able to plan for the privatisation of their estate and have resorted to sending a lawyer's letter to the town council asking for details of its accounts, especially its sinking fund.
Residents of the seven blocks of HUDC flats, Blocks 344 to 350 in Hougang Avenue 7, voted strongly for privatisation in February.
Mrs Lim, who is Minister in the Prime Minister's Office as well as Second Minister for Finance and Transport, said this was troubling as residents were asking many questions. But, she said, the town council run by the WP has kept quiet.
Mrs Lim said this has great implications for residents of Aljunied GRC, because if the WP cannot account for itself in Hougang Town Council, residents should wonder how it can manage a town council on a larger scale.
She said: "Is it just messy or are they holding back till after the elections so that whoever wins Hougang will then inherit the accounts? The Workers' Party has always emphasised transparency and accountability of the town council. It is very perplexing why they have kept very quiet." - TODAY
