THE Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) yesterday launched a new talent recruitment programme called the Young Professionals Programme (YPP), replacing its Associates Programme.

Lim Siong Guan, group president, said: 'Excellent grades are not good enough. They must be people of character and integrity (to qualify for the YPP).'
The YPP looks for cultural fit of a candidate in addition to academic qualifications and work experience. GIC said that this allows it to determine where the candidate would be most appropriately deployed within GIC, as these individuals are joining the entire company and not applying for a specific position.
At the launch yesterday, GIC deputy chairman Tony Tan congratulated the 2008 batch of Associates Programme graduates on finishing 12 months of learning and on-the-job training. The Associates Programme was launched by GIC when it decided to put in the resources and effort to grow its own people, rather than try to outbid the industry for talent.
Dr Tan, who is also GIC executive director, then addressed the incoming YPP class of 2009, congratulating them on making it through the selection criteria, which was expanded to include graduates who have been out of university for up to four years.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>He said that 'while it is cliche for firms to say that people are their most important asset, we put our money where our mouth is', emphasising that 'because of the unique role that GIC plays, we need people who have the right instincts to act in the interests of our clients and of GIC'.
The 12 pioneer inductees selected from a pool of 2,000 will begin their one-year training by going for five weeks of intensive classroom training in finance, economics, investment analysis and GIC's businesses. This is followed by three job rotations of two months each (generally one to public markets, one to private markets and one to corporate services), capped by a trainee stint in one of the departments. Those who complete the YPP successfully will be appointed associates.

Who are GAyeSee's clients? Indon fugitives and Burmese drug lords? Should they not be serving Sporns only?
