<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to Wednesday's report, 'A golden glow to Christmas light-up', and am intrigued to read the Singapore Tourism Board's (STB) claim: 'Last year, more than six million people took in the festive lights at the two areas (that is, Marina Bay and Orchard Road), a marginal increase from 2007.'
This is despite the fact that in the last quarter of last year, the world was in the throes of a financial crisis not seen in decades.
How does STB compute its figures when there are no entrance fees or turnstiles to count visitors, and not even Electronic Road Pricing fees for walking the pavement to get to the attractions.
Does STB expect to report record figures again this year, what with $100 million spent on the Apec meetings and $40 million on the makeover of Orchard Road and the undisclosed expenditure on this year's glow?
