SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA: Police shot dead four men including two members of the notorious Mamak Gang after they opened fire at police near a petrol station along the Federal Highway here.
It is believed the four men in a stolen silver-coloured Proton Waja and two other accomplices in a black Proton Perdana were waiting for the petrol kiosk owner to take his earnings after the National Day long weekend to the bank yesterday.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said they got a tip-off at about 9.50am on suspicious characters in two cars parked near the petrol station.
Two patrol cars with eight members from the police's Special Task Force went to the scene. As they drove up to the Proton Waja, the front passenger fired shots at the policemen.
Police returned fire, killing all four men inside. The duo in the other car managed to escape on foot in the direction of the Malawati Stadium. A manhunt has been launched.
Two of the dead were identified as Asrab Ali Ahmad Kabir and Logatharan Doraisamy. The third had two identity cards on him with the names Murugan Thangavelu and Ravi Shanker Devaraj Muniandy. Police did not find any identification on the fourth man.
DCP Khalid said initial investigations showed two of them were Mamak Gang members, and the others new recruits.
"Their modus operandi is the same as that used by the Mamak Gang, which is to pose as cops. We found a police vest and a sticker with the police logo on the windscreen," he said.
Two of the dead had been previously held at the Simpang Renggam detention centre while another was wanted in a robbery case.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Hasnan Hassan said police believed the Steyr 9mm semi-automatic pistol used by the suspects jammed after three shots had been fired.
Police also recovered a parang, a long knife and a handphone from the Proton Waja.
Our Police will siam.
