Gang robbers arrested following highspeed chase
KOTA KINABALU: Police believe they have crippled a gang of robbers in the state with the arrests of three men following a high-speed chase in Tawau.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the gang was believed to have been involved in a number of burglaries and car thefts in towns like Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu.
Hamza said the three men arrested were a 35-year-old local and two foreigners aged 29 and 39 while another gang member managed to escape.
Police chased the thieves while they were making their getaway from an unoccupied house they had broken into along Jalan Apas, some 11km from Tawau town at about 8pm on Wednesday.
Policemen were forced to fire at the car to stop the vehicle. One of the thieves was shot in the thigh while trying to attack the policemen.
Meanwhile, Hamza said police had completed their probe into the death of former Batu Sapi MP Datuk Edmund Chong Ket Wah in a traffic mishap four months ago.
He said they had handed over their investigation papers to the Senior Federal Counsel’s office.
Chong was killed on Oct 9 after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car along Jalan Coastal at Sembulan near here.
