The
Chinese media reported that a number of coffeeshops at Tampines Street 81 have
been turned into makeshift gambling dens. Gamblers were observed to be betting
on horses openly.
Residents in the area are unhappy of the situation. One resident told the
media that this has been going on for awhile.
“Every time, there will be 4 persons sitting at a table. Then you will see a
number of people approaching the table and talking to them. After transacting,
the people will leave,” he said.
The resident added that these people will always appear in weekends, betting
from afternoon to evening.
A 65-year-old resident, Mr Wong, also told reporters that horse betting has
been going on for at least 2 years.
“I always go to the coffee shops to buy dinner. On the surface, the gamblers
look like they are just ordinary coffee shop customers. On closer look, you can
see them taking out cash to transact among one another,” Mr Wong said.
Mr Wong fears that gambling openly at the coffee shops may bring bad
influence to kids also going to the there to buy food.
Housewife, Mdm Teo, hoped that the authorities would do something about the
open gambling occurring at these coffee shops in Tampines St 81.
Tampines St 81 falls under MP Masagos’ ward
Checking on Google Map, indeed there are a number of coffee shops around
Tampines St 81:
They are spread in the vicinity among blocks 821 to 829.
According to Tampines town council website [Link], this area
falls under Tampines West, a ward in-charged by MP Masagos Zulkifli:
Last month (9 Apr), Mr Masagos was promoted by PM Lee to become a full
Minister in the Cabinet (‘Masagos: My promotion to Minister due to meritocracy‘).
PMO announced that he will continue in the Ministry of Home Affairs and
Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Second Minister in both ministries, MHA and
MFA.
In an interview with the media, Mr Masagos told reporters that his promotion
to full Minister is a testament to how Singapore is run on the basis of
meritocracy.
He said, “I think this is also how Singapore runs on the basis of
meritocracy. That you get the post, and are rewarded for your performance and
contributions because of the impact you have made. Not because you are close to
a particular person or that you are the son of somebody.”
“I think this is important because it gives you the credibility to the people
you serve as well as your colleagues. And I’m glad that this is the system that
we have,” he added.
Commenting on the existence of gambling dens in Tampines, which comes under
the PAP, a netizen asked, “Can you imagine what Khaw would do and how he would
spin it if this happens in AHPETC?”
