An entrepreneur from Fujian province in southeastern China has given his daughter wedding presents worth 210 million yuan (US$33 million), breaking records set two other Fujian entrepreneurs last year.
Both the bride and groom in the latest union are surnamed Li. The groom is the son of a village committee secretary in Changle, a county-level city in eastern Fujian, according to the Fuzhou-based newspaper Dongnan Kuaibao. The bride comes from a family that owns many enterprises both within and outside the province. Although the bride's family is wealthy, they have — until now — maintained a reputation for keeping a low profile and giving to charity.
The wedding banquet was held on Jan. 16 with nearly 3,000 guests in attendance at over 300 tables and each guest was given 1,000 yuan (US$160) for attending.
Wealthy Fujian entrepreneurs seem to be in competition with each other when it comes to giving their daughters away. Two entrepreneurs in Jinjiang, a city in southeastern Fujian, last year saw their daughters and nieces wed in astonishingly opulent ceremonies.
Xu Liajie, CEO of Hengan International Group, gave his niece 1.4 million yuan (US$220,000) in Hengan stocks, a BMW, a Porsche and a mansion in Xiamen last November, while Wu Jinbiao, chairman of textile company Billion Industrial Holdings also gifted a dowry worth around 200 million yuan (US$32 million) to his daughter who got married last December.
