The following is a true account. Nothing extra added, nothing taken out.
I came across a recent piece of news that a certain newly founded vehicular sports company is setting up shop on the island and decided to call in to try to seek possible employment opportunities.
My call was to the general line and it was picked by a lady after a few rings. Immediately from her accent, I got the distinct impression this lady sounded Filipino, and perhaps in her mid twenties. Though her English was fluent, she did not sound (to me) managerial.
However the moment I initiated to ask to speak to the HR citing I was looking for employment opportunities, this lady's tone of voice changed (and drastically). To me, she suddenly seemed hostile and harsh (cold?).
First, she cited there was no one else around and available in the office to help with that, but the time was already 9.50am!
When I pressed on asking about the HR personnel or manager I should correspond with, she next mentioned there was no such department, that the whole office was but one single department.
When I went further still as I found her not to be the least forthcoming, she sort of reluctantly insisted I should just give my name and my contact so she could refer to someone, and hopefully that someone would get back to me. She definitely didnt sound convincing here, I began to have suspicions if anything would actually go through even if I did so.
For my own personal assurance, I asked whos that 'someone' she would be referring to, she half blurted out a name (which I had to ask repeatedly to clarify, she sounded like she wished she hadnt say so). But I knew that name to be the Managing Director. Again I felt suspicious how would a fresh employment application, much less an enquiry by phone, be headed straight for the top executive?
Despite my insistence again, that there had to be another one else, maybe an operations or general manager, that lady kept insisting theres NO ONE ELSE to refer to and that I could not to speak to ANY ONE ELSE about this??!
There was just something wrong with and in her responses, the explicit message I was getting from her from start till now was she could decide the fate of my query and its her alone. I seriously wondered if she would be trying to protect her employment from possible competition.
At this point, both of us were sounding quite frustrated, perhaps out of that, she finally suggested I call back half hour later to try my luck again. I then asked for her name, this time she refused, citing that I didnt do so when she asked. Before we went any much further, she set the phone down abruptly.
I recomposed myself and made another call to the same number. However this time my call was answered quite promptly by a man who identified himself as a manager and suggested I could forward my interest of application to him directly if necessary.
From this incident, I would like to advise others who might also be seeking employment, to watch out for such cases and take reference. If anyone might be quizzing whats with this 'story', I can only say, this had not been the one and only encounter this manner, but the latent message in this one was definitely the most distinct.
