<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->A MINOR storm has broken out over a German researcher who caught the H1N1 virus after a trip to Philadelphia. In a statement on Wednesday, the A*Star scientist denied that he had continued to work and socialise for a week, despite having symptoms, before he sought help, which the Ministry of Health (MOH) had said on Tuesday.
The 56-year-old researcher, who works at the Biopolis, has been attacked on a number online forums, accused of 'endangering the public'.
On Wednesday, French embassy staff who were at a reception which he had attended at the ambassador's home on Thursday, said they had taken two days off from work.
In an e-mail sent through A*Star to The Straits Times, the man said he did not develop any flu-like symptoms while in the US.
'What I had was a chronic cough, which I had for the past year. It became worse after the weather in Philadelphia turned very cold and rainy on June 4,' he said. The cough returned to 'its usual level of mildness' when he left the US for Singapore.
'I continued to be free of all symptoms apart from my usual cough, which explained why I went about my normal activities. As a point of interest, I did not even cough throughout the duration of the concert which I attended on Saturday,' he added.
The man said he monitored his condition by taking his temperature twice a day as advised. 'It was only on Monday afternoon, that my temperature was 37.8 degree Celsius. At that point, I called 993,' he said.
'I would never deliberately expose other people to the risk of infection,' he said, adding that he apologised for all the trouble that had resulted.
MOH declined to comment on his response.
