Move out of Tampines Central and cyclists behave differently

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
I REFER to the report, 'Tampines set to be first cycling town (Dec 14)'. Having lived in Tampines for a year, I agree that the widened footpaths have allowed cyclists and pedestrians to co-exist safely.
In the busy streets adjacent to the town centre, cyclists appear to be well-behaved, possibly because the heavy traffic makes abiding by the rules a rational choice for self-preservation.
On the other hand, move out to the area between Bedok Reservoir and Tampines, and it is a completely different situation.
Cyclists move around like pedestrians or vehicles depending on traffic conditions. If it is more efficient to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing, they ride happily across, when they should get down and push. If it is in their favour to cross the road as a vehicle, they go along with other vehicles.
The bridge across the canal that divides Tampines and Bedok Reservoir clearly shows a sign requiring cyclists to get down and push: I have seen only two women do so this year. One evening, a cyclist nearly knocked down my then pregnant wife on this narrow bridge.
Many cyclists have no understanding of traffic rules. At cross roads not governed by traffic lights, cars tend to stop (however momentarily) at the clearly labelled stop line before making a turn, while cyclists cycle on, oblivious to the fact that they can easily be missed when a motorist checks his blind spot.
Tampines Central may be a haven for cyclists and pedestrians, but more can be done in the peripheral areas - and the rest of Singapore - in terms of education, vigilance, surveillance and a concerted enforcement of the law to avoid unnecessary accidents.

'Seriously consider licences for riding bicycles.'
MR DAVID TAN: 'I refer to the report, 'Tampines set to be first cycling town' (Dec 14).In view of the increasing number of cyclists throughout Singapore, the Land Transport Authority should seriously consider licences for riding bicycles just as they do for motorcycles. Similarly, all cyclists must also be insured.'

Bicycle is one best machine mankind have invented. It is efficient, cheap, eco friendly and provide a good mean of excercise. It is one of the best solution for the last miles problem and idea for compact city like sg. Many city have make it cycling friendly with bicycle lane and rules to protect cyclist. Unfortunately it also mean less business for transport companies and revenues. Here the excuse is we dont have land for cyclist and is a real lost we did not harness the benefit of this machine when we have land for ft.

Don't worry Tampines residents. If a family member gets killed by cyclists on foot paths. MP Irene Ng and Minister Mah Bow Tan will give you an ang pow!

cycling here is stupid because of humidity, congested roads and asian culture. only the poor resort to cycling. have been to amsterdam and it works there because of weather, cycling lanes on roads and the small city centre. the bus lanes here are fast getting hogged by cycling foreigners, and with electric bicycles selling cheaply tiong aik undertaker will see booming business.

Both the rich and poor enjoy cycling and there are a number of bankers cycling in sg. Some of their bike are worth more cars! The problem here is cycling is not part of the transport plan since it does not bring in revenue. This is the root of the problem. Cycling is an outdoor activity although the heat here does have some impact its not a hugh problem.

If cycling on the pavement is only allowed in Tampines, does this mean that it is illegal everywhere else? This might mean that countless pavement cyclists, most of them FTs, are breaking the law daily.
At least Ong Kian Min had the decency to say that pedestrians still have right of way. Did the other MPs ever say that? Will they be responsible if there is an accident between a pavement cyclist and a pedestrian?

Cyclists are like pests. They ride all over pavements meant for pedestrians. My stoopid gf always wonder why i am DU LAN with these cyclists.

Let me ask u, every few steps u take, got bicycle bell ring at u from behind or front the side. When walking along a narrow pavement, u need to wait for them to ride pas b4 u can cross wor. NOT DU LAN?

Cyclists shud just f off the pavements.

It is not possible for a bike to cost more then a car in Singapore.

Not even if it's a Pinarello with full Campagnolo parts.

If someone is hurt/killed by bicycle while walking along a footpath, can we sue the cyclists for negligent ?

And if the cyclist is not insured, can we sue the MIW/WIW since they ok-ed the cyclists and did not demand that they be licenced and insured ?

I suggest that when you are walking on a pavement and a cyclist rings the bell from behind, just continue to walk in a straight line.
You have the right of way, remember?

I would think the answer would be "yes" to both questions.
