Dji Hwa Nam, 43, an Indonesian, admitted to the offence at a block of flats in Geylang Bahru on Nov 13 last year. A court heard that he had entered the lift together with a 24-year old Filipino maid that morning. He stood behind the victim who was standing closer to the lift door when he unzipped his trousers and committed the offence. The victim saw what he did through the mirrors at the corners of the lift and became frightened. She took a step forward to move closer to the lift and Dji followed suit. When the victim got out of the lift on the 21st floor, she turned around to confirm what he was doing. He continued doing what he did and smiled at her. She reported the incident to her employer's brother, who called the police. Dji could have been jailed for up to one year or fined or both for insulting the modesty of a woman.

SINGAPORE (AFP) - - A Singaporean man with a fetish for smelling womens' armpits has been sentenced to 14 years in jail and 18 strokes of the cane, legal officials said Friday.
A court employee confirmed the sentence, issued Thursday, against Mohammed Ismail Ariffin, 36.
Ariffin had a fixation for touching or smelling women, particularly their armpits, and was convicted of molesting 23 women, his lawyer Noor Mohamed Marican told AFP.
"He's got this problem. Poor chap," Noor said in a brief interview.
After reading an expert report that said Ariffin was likely to re-offend, Judge James Leong issued a preventive detention order, which means Ariffin will not be eligible for parole, The Straits Times said.
Ariffin, who is mildly retarded, would often attack his victims inside lifts, the report said.
It said Noor argued against a long sentence and in favour of rehabilitation and medical treatment.
But Leong said he found "precious little" in Ariffin's favour, The Straits Times reported

First of all, both crimes are sick. Second though, I believe the latter case calls for the defendant to be interned in Woodbridge first before going on to jail to serve his sentence, because of his mild retard condition.

Third, and most important point is that sentencing should be equally handed out. Fairly or unfairly, people will do a compare-and-contrast with both cases, and previous cases as a precedent, and if there's a inconsistency, that puts the entire system into question; Because after all, common law is created on the basis of older cases which has precedent over the current ones. Unless there's a basis for new judgment, an inconsistency may mean that the court is open to doubt.

I have always wondered how these cases are solved thru out the decades. In most countries, this is a case of he said she said. I mean there are no witnesses. This complain would have just been filed away.So many things do not make sense in this report. Firstly, by the time she goes back and tells the employer that there is a man masturbating in the lift, and he called the police and the police arrived, i am sure this Indon chap will have long dissappeared. So, how did the police apprehend him? They drive around and than just happened to pick this guy up? I mean, shit, they have no name, no ic, how the fuck did they find him? 2ndly, who the hell confesses? Even if I am guilty, and I vehemently denied it, how can I be found guilty if there are no other witnesses? Knowing this, all I do is call my lawyer, and shut up, and deny it. I mean, were there any distinguishing marks on his lan chiao that the maid discribed? 3rdly, given the Police's well known propensity for cold air con showers, and other interogation techniques, even the virgin mary would confess to something she did not do.
Of course, this Elena Chong reporter is as useless as tits on a bull. Ask some questions next time.
