Eleven women between the ages of 28 and 40 were arrested when the Singapore Police Force (SPF) conducted raids on unlicensed massage parlours on Tuesday (12 December).
The raids took place at Jalan Bukit Merah, Tanjong Pagar and South Bridge Road, said the SPF on Thursday (14 December).
The women were arrested for offences under the the Women’s Charter and Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
Under the Massage Establishments Act, action will also be taken against four massage establishments, added the police.
Investigations are ongoing.
During a Parliamentary sitting on 4 November, several Members of Parliament (MPs) had raised concerns about the high number of massage parlours in HDB estates.
As part of changes to the Massage Establishments Bill, massage outlets in Housing Development Board (HDB) areas
will not be allowed to operate 24 hours a day.
Second Minister for Home Affairs Josephine Teo said in Parliament in November that figures had showed a 40-per-cent increase in the number of unlicensed massage establishments found by the police from 2013 to 2016.
