Two months ago, one year to the day after the beheading of Samuel Paty, a square bearing the name of the teacher murdered by a Chechen jihadist was inaugurated in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Unfortunately, two months after the corresponding plaques were installed near the Sorbonne, one of them was vandalized. The matter was reported on Twitter on Monday, December 20, by Nicholas Gavrilenko, treasurer of the Union of Secular Families (Ulaf). The association manager shared two photos, one of which depicts the original panel. The latter is marked: “Professor of history and geography, assassinated on October 16, 2020, victim of Islamist terrorism.” However, the degradation reported by Nicolas Gavrilenko is not trivial: only the term “Islamist” was targeted, being entirely covered with white paint.
Willful blindness
The panel thus vandalized therefore only mentions: “Samuel Paty (…) victim of terrorism”. A highly political degradation, the deep meaning of which has not escaped Nicolas Gavrilenko: “The plaque naming the square next to the Sorbonne as a tribute has been vandalized and signs the willful blindness of some,” writes the secular activist, who still insists upon reality: “It is indeed the ISLAMIST terrorism of which Samuel Paty was a victim.” Concluding his message, he called on the town hall of the 5th arrondissement (Libres, movement founded by Valérie Pécresse) to “quickly restore” the degraded plaque. For the moment, the district town hall has, it seems, not reacted yet.
