A high school student in Annecy goes before a judge for threatening to kill a teacher,” translated from “Un lycéen d’Annecy devant un juge pour avoir menacé de mort une professeure,” Le Figaro, November 19 :
A 17-year-old high school student from Annecy was presented Thursday, November 19 to a juvenile court judge for threatening to kill a teacher, whom he promised on a social network to “make a Samuel Paty”, AFP has learned from the police.
Samuel Paty, a teacher in Conflans-Saint-Honorine in the Paris suburbs, was beheaded on October 16 by an 18-year-old Chechen Russian refugee, for showing caricatures of Mohammed during classes on freedom of expression.
“On Monday morning, the teacher came, panicked for herself and her family, to file a complaint with a Snapchat screenshot and with an anonymous email from a student” warning her of what was going on, explained Captain Sandra Bernard of the DDSP of Savoie to AFP, confirming information from France Bleu Pays de Savoie. It all started with an assignment that this professional high school teacher had asked students to return to an email address.
In a focus group of students in the class and alumni, one of them – who had had a dispute with her last year and was no longer in her class – asked the others to send death threats to the teacher. He himself wrote: “I am going to make her a Samuel Paty”, according to the same source. After identification, the high school student was arrested at his home Tuesday morning, placed in police custody, and presented Thursday before the juvenile court judge for “death threats against a person in charge of the public service and provocation of a minor to the commission of a felony or misdemeanor”.
In police custody, the young man, “known for his behavioral problems in several establishments”, “admitted the facts but said he did not intend to kill her”. He had “stated that as a joke”, added Sandra Bernard. The teacher is on sick leave.
