On Sunday, February 12, 2023, around midnight, a 40-year-old woman was the victim of a rape.
She was attacked during the journey between her work and her home in the lower part of the Crêt-de-Roc district of Saint-Etienne, said David Charmatz, public prosecutor of Saint-Etienne.
Violently assaulted, with injuries that led to bleeding, the victim lost consciousness. However, she was able to find help from a neighbor after her attacker left.
An attacker on an electric scooter
Hospitalized and then heard by the police, she only kept a few vague memories of her attack. She told investigators that her attacker followed her on an electric scooter.
Genetic samples were taken to look for traces possibly left by the rapist. But the male genetic profile brought to light by the laboratory is unknown and is not listed in the national DNA file.
The man spotted thanks to CCTV footage
The investigation, entrusted to the departmental security, was then extended by the Saint-Etienne prosecutor’s office, which opened a judicial investigation into the rape charge on February 21, specifies the prosecutor.
The police spotted, thanks to video surveillance recordings, an individual who could match the profile of the attacker, living not far from the facts, in the city center of Saint-Etienne.
The suspect was arrested on February 23.
A search of his home allowed the technical and scientific police to find clothes belonging to him as well as a scooter with traces of the victim’s blood.
A 21-year-old Tunisian
The suspect, a 21-year-old foreigner of Tunisian nationality, is not known to the judicial services. He has been living in France for almost 2 months, welcomed by his 3 brothers.
After extending his custody, the investigating judge referred this individual. The man was indicted and placed, on the compliant requisitions of the prosecution, in criminal pre-trial detention by the judge of freedoms, Saturday, February 25.
Incarcerated at La Talaudière
The man suspected of the rape provided several outlandish explanations while in police custody, first denying the facts before explaining that it was a conspiracy.
He then exercised his right to remain silent before the investigating judge and then declared that he no longer remembered the facts to the judge of freedoms and detention. He was imprisoned in La Talaudière prison, awaiting trial.
