On Sunday afternoon, the police intervened at rue Jean-Deprat in Leers to arrest a man suspected of having kidnapped, assaulted and raped a teenage girl of about fifteen from Douai in his apartment for several days.
N. is on her umpteenth cigarette of the day. Tired, shocked, she cannot recover from what she went through that Sunday: “Her face still haunts me.” As her son arrived home, she heard from outside her house a cry for help from a young girl from an apartment across the street.
“I approached. The teenager urged me to come, she told me that she had been raped, that she was going to die, that the man had locked her up, but had just gone shopping.” The voice came from the doorway of an open bay window blocked by a sticking blind. “I was able to pull the blind up several decimetres. The girl was naked, I told her to get a towel and her clothes. Then she crawled under the blind.”
She was just skin and bones, with bruises all over her body and strangulation marks on her neck … The teenager, aged about 15, was in a catastrophic state when she rescued her, N. said.
“She was shaking all over”
The police were called by a neighbor whom N. stopped before taking the traumatized girl to her home. “She was terrified, she wouldn’t let go, she was shaking all over. She held onto me until help arrived. She told me that she came from Douai, that she had been kidnapped by this man and been locked in this apartment since last Monday. She told me that she called for help several times without anyone answering her.”
The man arrested and taken into custody
As firefighters picked up the allegedly Iraqi teenager, police managed to stop the man before he reached the door of his home, where he was said to have held the girl captive.
Placed in custody, the Leers man was still being interviewed on Monday evening, according to a source close to the investigation. When questioned, the Douai prosecutor’s office said that it had not received a report for kidnapping or disappearance. Had the teenager run away? Did she get into the car on purpose or was she removed? The ongoing investigation should provide more information. When questioned, the Lille prosecutor’s office has, for the moment, not responded to our requests.
An unstable and lonely personality
Disagreeing with his family, single, misogynist, with no known friends: the descriptions given by neighbors of the man arrested this Sunday all point to a very lonely personality. “He has the face of an angel, he has a beautiful way of speaking, he is very intelligent, he can be gentle, but suddenly he turns into a demon,” testifies one of the neighbors. A former classmate remembers a cultured teenager, “The kind of person who does better without a big education!”
GIGN intervention
Yet as years went by, the man described as a radical Muslim remained in the area and spent his days hitting cars or terrorizing the neighborhood. “Two years ago, he shouted ‘Allah akbar’ in the middle of the night. I thought I saw gas canisters, I was afraid he would blow up the building, I called the police,” said another neighbor. The GIGN then reportedly approached and arrested the man before he was released. “He suffers from psychiatric disorders, so each time, he gets released. He knows it and he plays with it,” she adds. Several neighbors say they have seen him running around naked or shooting arrows with a bow. Despite all these elements and faced with facts that could be blamed on him, the worry remains.
